Tower Location and Antenna Query

Thanks! I think that is quite a long way away, I'll probably be better off aiming at the Faure tower.

I'll just drill two small dents in the modem, it should be fine.

No problem, it seems like all the new ones are like that.
 
Surely you can see that it has been drilled and not manufactured that way? You can do it, but just be prepared if something goes wrong with it and you try and book it into Vodacare that they might say it is not under warranty due to user damage.

Are you saying that if the modem suffered for example a failed flash update, Vodacare would try and weasel out of their responsibility and claim my drilling somehow caused it?

No saying they will....but it is a possibility. I bet if you went and drilled holes into your laptop to imrove airflow HP wont look too kindly on it either :-)

I found the Lingelethu West traffic department, I then used Google Earth to search for "makabeni, cape town, south africa".
It turns out it's nearly 15km from my father's place, I wouldn't have thought it would be possible to get 3G/HSDPA over that distance, and without an antenna!
Speeds aren't too bad either, he's getting at least 2.5Mbps down.

Is it rural area ?
 
On the subject of identifying towers, I've noticed I don't receive cell broadcasts from certain Vodacom towers. I know Vodacom moved the cell information from topic 50 to topic 60 in favour of the "Y4L" messages, and topic 60 probably isn't a high priority, but from these particular towers I get nothing, not even the "Y4L" messages.

@VD: Are you aware of this, and is it intentional?

ginggs if changed to channel 50 you should still receive cell broadcast messages.
 
No, from certain towers I get nothing on topic 50 or 60.

@VD: Did you manage to find anything with cell IDs 5121, 5122 and 5123?
A couple of posts back you asked if my father was in a rural area, do you need his co-ordinates?
