Does anyone drive a Toyota Corolla 1.4d Prestige. In my search for a new car I came across this car and I’m quite keen for it. Its a diesel engine.
Power 66kw@3800rpm
Torque 205Nm @1800rpm

Is this engine too slow and week, I do long distance a lot with a load, and I like to move on the road.

I didn't even know you get that in diesel. We had a toyota corolla 1.3 or 1.4 (unsure)shared company car. That thing was a piece of shît. With some people in it you were slower than most trucks on the road especially pullaway.
 
No, the car will be fine, but if you are so keen on a diesel and like to get going on the road why not look for a Ford Focus sedan 1.5tdci? With 88kw and 270Nm you won't be struggling to get going.

Im not so keen on Ford, I really know nothing about them. My choice is really down to a Toyota Corolla 1.4d with 44000km on the clock and a VW Jetta 1.4 Tsi Comfortline with 60000km. My two big things are power and space and cost and these two are the best so fat. Ford Focus felt a bit cramped for me.
Any advice on these two options?

I am afraid the Corolla as awesome s car it is falls short of your requirements, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Jetta, it has more features than Corolla and it's generally the better car.

My biggest fear is turbo technology, isn’t the problematic in the longrun? Isn’t Toyota’s D4D much more tried and tested. I know the Jetta is a superb car to drive, but my biggest worry is maintenance costs.

The Corolla 1.4D also has a turbo.
 
On Buyers Guide on Ignition Adam Ford said the Jetta is not as reliable as the Corolla.
 
Just go and testdrive the corolla. Any sane person will immediately realise how bad it is.

Get the Jetta or an opel or mazda.

I actually test drove both yesterday. The Diesel Corrola actually drives very well. Not as good as the Jetta. Just that as I am buying second hand, I just wonder if the old man who traded in the Jetta wasn’t having problems. Thats all i am weary of.

I would gladly get an opel astra, But my wife isn’t convinced. i am actually getting an opel as a second car, my own to use. But my wife thinks its not a good car and I can’t convince her.
 
I have the Corolla, 2015 with almost 120000km. It is slow off the line but its not built for 0-100.

It is perfect for long distance. It can cruise comfortably at highway speeds and more.

Best feature for me is consumption, I easily get under 5.5L/100km day to day. Even as low as 4.4L/100km if I stick to 120km/h on the long road.

If you looking to blaze a trail it's not for you, but if you looking for a reliable, comfortable and cheap to run vehicle go for it.

I suggest you go test drive one and decide.

This is very helpful. Do you drive the Corolla 1.4d? If so how are the maintenance costs. And on the high way carrying a load, do you struggle going up a hill and do you pull well. I dont really need a speedstar, i need realiable but not torture.

Yes but I think Toyota have worked on their diesel turbo technology for longer, thats why the Hilux and fortuner are so reliable. Is TSI as easy to maintain as the D4D. I am not arguing here, I am asking as I dont know much about cars.

The older 1.4 tsi's were a bit problematic, but vw has been doing tdi's for long, nothing wrong with it. My caddy work vehicle is on 266k very hard driven km's, and it's still running fine.
 
It is the 1.4 D4D, I've only done 1 service thus far out of service plan. It cost R1300 for the minor service.

Brakepads are expensive at the agents but you get aftermarket items, Fronts cost about R700 and rears R350, changed once thus far. Stock size tyres cost under R1000 for decent brands and last around 60k. I change the air filter more often as Toyota only does it every 60k, this costs about R500.

I usually travel alone with a boot full of equipment and tools, but even with 5 adults it's not going to slow to a crawl going uphill, usually keeps to 120km/h depending on how steep the hill is.

Powerband is between 1800rpm and 3200rpm so if you keep it there it works well.

So you dont feel a weakening engine with higher milage? And never had trouble with the turbo? Do you think this car is better or atleast as good a Jetta.
