From what I recall, Toyota uses BMW engines/technology in their diesel sedans.
I am trying to reaserch for verification of this idea. Do you think you can point me somewhere
No Turbo issues, just need to to apply some care when driving a turbo vehicle. for instance, I always idle for a minute or two when I park and don't drive hard when its cold. These tips are well documented on the net.
The new GD range of diesel engines from Toyota have some BMW tech. The D4D was fully Toyota.
The Corolla uses the 1ND-TV engine which has been in production since 2002 in various models, even the Mini One D.

You are correct. The 1.4 was made by Toyota and supplied to BMW. According to the article below, BMW assisted with the 1.6 & 2.0 engines to Toyota.

But what did BMW do with the 1.4 d4d? I don't remember any BMW models using it, the Mini perhaps?

I used to have the 2.0l Exclusive, awesome car. While the 1.4 models are lower size wise, their power is good and the torque excellant. If you want a race car, don't go diesel, if you want a car to cruise, good long distance and what I call "lazy power", then yes.
I miss that car and it annoys me that some little sh** hijacked it to be cut up and put in a quantum

The Jetta is the better car overall but the Corolla would give you peace of mind in its reliability. Go for the Corolla, if it disappoints you know you can always get a good trade in on it.

Drive both and decide what you like better. The jetta should be stronger with a nicer interior. The corolla should be slightly lighter on fuel. Both have that awful protruding arms in the boot.
My company has the Jetta TSI as our standard company car. Think we have around 15 if them. No issues with engines on any of them that I know of.
Reliability will always be a gamble as you don't know exactly how well looked after the car has been.
However....the ride in the Jettas (actually in any VW) is far better than Corolla. I've ridden most Toyotas as rentals, and the ride quality is inferior. Dunno how Toyota does it, but all Corollas feel twitchy on the road, much more so in windy conditions. Just doesn't feel as stable as VW.
TLDR.... I'd take the VW.

The specs itself should tell you all you need to know. 66kw is enough. Nothing to write home about but will easily go 140. With the torque you will not have any issues with inclines. I would say you can compare it to a 1600 car of the 90s on a power stand point excluding the torque (which is more in the diesel obviously)

I've got the newer 1.6T and its awesome. Not an ounce of trouble in almost 3 years.
why you comparing a petrol and diesel car? dont you want to look at a diesel jetta and compare apples with apples? IMO the TSI is very good, the TDI from the same year is also very good.
My friend knows alot about VW's and Jettas, and he recently drove up to JHB to buy one with a friend. Aparently VW did big fixes to the engine after 2012, so you should be much safer than a model before 2012.
A trick to check the engine for wear and tear is to have a look inside the engine through the oil cap and see if there is any sludge or carbon buildup. If you see any sludge or heavy carbon buildup dont buy it as it didnt have proper oil changes and/or was not properly maintained and/or was driven on red line too much.
