Toyota Corolla Cross (Rolla SUV)

Toyota Corolla Cross [US]

For more than 50 years, Corolla has been synonymous with dependability, fuel efficiency, safety and value - and today, Toyota is evolving the series even further. Based on the ever-popular Corolla sedan, the all-new 2022 Corolla Cross is the bold compact crossover you didn't know you needed until now.

"Our loyal customers love the quality, durability and reliability that has helped make Corolla the best-selling nameplate in history," said Lisa Materazzo, group vice president of Toyota Marketing. "With the all-new Corolla Cross we are building upon that foundation and offering more versatility and fun to adapt to their evolving lifestyles."

Available in front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD), the compact SUV maximizes the inherent potential of the high-strength TNGA-C platform and a 169-horsepower, 2.0-liter Dynamic Force Engine, enabling the all-new model to achieve high-quality performance, a comfortable ride and outstanding spaciousness. What's more, the surprising cargo capacity gives it the versatility to accommodate life's adventures.

The Toyota Corolla Cross Is Not A Crossover, But It Will Probably Be Just As Popular

The new Corolla SUV is a very slow car, but I expect it'll rush off dealer lots.

Me, I’d take a Cross L, with AWD, of course, the most important option. The upgrade doesn’t cost too much, running just $1,300. The option I’d really want would be a hybrid drivetrain. If I’m buying a car that drives like the Cross, I better get some gnarly MPGs in return. Toyota neither confirmed nor denied that it’s coming. The carmaker basically said to keep an eye out, but if there’s a hybrid it’ll probably sit at the top of the price range.

That brings us to the best spec of any Corolla, because what is a Corolla if not a cheap, reliable car for drivers who just want to get from here to there? Except that now, drivers can pick between a sedan, a hatch and an entry-level SUV.

The Corolla Cross starts at $22,195 in its lowest trim, and goes up to $26,325, not accounting for AWD. The Cross hits dealers in October. And it’s probably going to be all over the place soon after that.

Toyota Corolla Cross price & standard features confirmed for South Africa

The Toyota Corolla Cross will be heading to the South African market in a few months. The local arm of the Japanese brand has now provided a detailed break-down of what features will be standard throughout each trim and how much these will cost.

Kicking off the range of the new Toyota Corolla Cross will be the Xi trim, with a price tag of R349 900, which boast colour coding of select trimmings, power-adjustable and auto-retractable door mirrors, LED taillamps with auto-on controls, four cupholders in the cabin, stowage binnacles, a 60/40 fold rear bench and a multifunction steering wheel. The trim is further supported by cruise control, air conditioning, a 12-volt power outlet, three USB ports, all electric windows and a multi-information display. This model will be sold exclusively with the naturally aspirated 1,8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.

The Toyota Corolla Cross Xs will come standard with LED headlamps, park distance control and rain-sensing wipers. Within the cabin, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control and a TFT display for the instrument cluster is added. This model also adopts the touchscreen infotainment system with a reverse camera display and two additional USB ports. This trim will be available with the naturally aspirated engine at R390 100 and a hybrid powertrain at R413 000.

The top-spec Toyota Corolla Cross Xr model will boast a number of additional convenience and safety features such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane trace assist and a pre-collision system. It also wears a larger set of 18-inch alloy wheels. For the base engine, a price tag of R425 400 has been confirmed while the Hybrid will set you back R448 300.

Toyota Corolla Cross (2021) Specs & Price Announced

With local production of the Corolla Cross set to commence this month, Toyota SA has now confirmed the engine line-up (including a petrol-electric hybrid) of its new compact family car, which will slot in between the Urban Cruiser and RAV4 models.

Earlier this year, it was announced that, following a R2-billion-plus investment in Toyota South Africa Motors’ (TSAM) assembly plant in KZN, the Corolla Cross would be produced at Prospecton, from where it would be sold in the local market (from November 2021, we believe) and exported to more than 43 countries in Africa. The newcomer utilises the new Corolla’s TNGA (GA-C) platform and is produced alongside the Corolla Quest.

Toyota Corolla Cross Trim Levels

Toyota South Africa is using its traditional trim level designation of Xi, Xs and Xr for the new Corolla Cross. Xi kicks off the range with Toyota saying its aimed at customers seeking value motoring. Mid-tier Xs throws in additional convenience features and comfort, while Xr gives you the full package of larger wheels, comprehensive features as well as enhanced exterior look.

Despite it being the entry-level derivative, the Xi features colour-coded bodywork, keyless entry, power-adjustable and auto-retractable exterior mirrors, LED taillamps and automatic light control. Interior Items include four cupholders, stowage binnacles, 60/40 fold-down rear seats and steering switches. Cruise Control, air-conditioning, 12-volt power outlet, all-round one-touch power windows and a Multi-Information Display (MID) round off the spec offering.

Xs trim enhances the package with foglamps, an upgrade to LED headlamps, Park Distance Control (PDC) and rain-sensing wipers. The interior trim is upgraded to leather, while the air-conditioning switches to a dual-zone variant and the Multi-Information Display (MID) is upgraded to the TFT-type. There’s also a reverse camera, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity as well as two more USB ports.

Finally, the Corolla Cross Xr model adds in even more safety spec, plus 18-inch wheels and additional convenience features.

The top-of-the-range Xr models offer customers additional convenience and safety specification and an upgrade to 18-inch wheels.

SA PRICING: Toyota Corolla Cross is cheaper than the hatch and sedan

The locally-built Toyota Corolla Cross is set to go on sale in South Africa in early November and the manufacturer has released local pricing and spec information ahead of time.

Toyota SA is positioning it quite aggressively, with the Corolla Cross starting at R349 900 and topping out at R448 300 (see full pricing below). This makes it significantly cheaper than the imported Corolla hatch and sedan models with which it shares a platform, which start at R391 700 and R403 500 respectively.

Slotting beneath the Rav4, the Corolla Cross also has a price advantage over natural rivals such as the Mazda CX-30 (from R469 000), Hyundai Creta (from R377 900) and Nissan Qashqai (from R422 900).

Toyota Corolla Cross buyers will get to choose from two engines and three trim grades. The normally aspirated 1.8-litre base engine produces 103kW and 172Nm, while the 1.8-litre petrol-electric hybrid boasts a system output of 90kW. All models are fitted with a CVT gearbox, with power going to the front wheels in all cases.

All Toyota Corolla Cross models will be sold with a six-service/90 000km service plan and three-year/100 000km warranty. In the case of the Hybrid model, there’s also an eight-year warranty on the hybrid battery.

Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport revealed with specially tuned suspension

The Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport has been revealed in Taiwan as a sporty option for the latest crossover from the Japanese manufacturer. Included in this package is a more dynamic appearance and a specifically tuned suspension.

From the exterior, the Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport benefits from a new black grille surround similar to the one found on the current Hilux Legend. This is accentuated by a silver anti-scuff panel applied to the lower part of the bumper. Further design revisions include side under-guards, black door mirror covers and an array of GR Sport badges. This appearance is accentuated by a set of 18-inch alloy wheels, a sports roof rack and shark fin antenna.

The cabin of the Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport receives just a short list of additions than include a set of sports seats with “GR” embossed into the headrests and a GR start-stop ignition button. Standard kit included within consists of a 9,0-inch touchscreen infotainment system connected to six speakers, “S-Flow smart constant” air conditioning with a set of vents for the rear bench and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel.

Making the Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport a sportier offering is a specifically tuned chassis. This consists of changes made to the electric power steering, front MacPherson struts and rear torsion bar suspension which is further supported by an aluminium alloy reinforced bracket.

Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport revealed with beefed up styling

The Toyota Corolla Cross is set to hit South African showrooms in early November, and although the initial model range doesn’t include a sporty model, the release of a GR Sport variant in Thailand this week tells us that something to that effect could be on the cards further down the line.

The Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport comes with a comprehensive exterior design package as well as chassis improvements, but as per the GR Sport norm, there are no engine changes to speak of. That means buyers can choose between the familiar normally aspirated 1.8-litre unit with 103kW and the petrol-electric hybrid with a system output of 90kW.

The Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport is set apart by numerous exterior styling enhancements, including a brand new (and somewhat Land Cruiser inspired) black grille, completely redesigned front bumper with silver skid plate, matching side guards and rear skid plate, two-tone exterior colour scheme with black roof and A-pillars, GR badging and 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels.

The leather-lined cabin has a dark colour scheme and it’s also set apart by GR seat embroidery and GR badging on the start button.

On the chassis front, Toyota has fitted a GR Sport sports suspension system as well as a GR Sport chassis reinforcement bracket.

Japanese-spec Toyota Corolla Cross revealed with new dynamic face

The Toyota Corolla Cross that will be sold to the Japanese market has been revealed with a bold new face. Everything else noted for the new crossover seems to be in-line with the offering provided to our local market, with a number of spec differences here and there.

The model pictured here has been dubbed the Toyota Corolla Cross Z which will enter the Japanese range as the hybrid option which employs the brand’s naturally aspirated 1,8-litre four-cylinder 2ZR-FXE petrol engine mated to an 1NM AC synchronous electric motor that sources power from a 6,5 Ah nickel-metal hydride battery pack.

Like our model, the Japanese-spec Toyota Corolla Cross offers 487 dm3 of boot space. The tailgate also boasts a hands-free functionality which can be operated by placing your foot under the rear bumper. A luggage active box is also installed for users that wish to store valuables out of sight. This can be shut flat to open up more luggage space with a goal to offer the potential for a wide range of luggage space layouts.

The Japanese arm describes the Toyota Corolla Cross design to be a combination of urban luxury and SUV excitement. Using urban and active principles, the new SUV claims to boast commanding proportions that are contrasted by a relaxed upper body which includes glass surfaces and head- and taillamps. This is contrasted by a set of wide and stable bumpers. Eight different colours will be available for this model.

Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport Announced

With Toyota South Africa preparing for the launch of the SA-built Corolla Cross, internationally a Corolla Cross GR Sport was announced.

The Toyota Corolla Cross will be arriving in local showrooms towards the end of the year, fresh off the production line at Toyota SA’s plant in Durban. With petrol and hybrid options available, it looks like customers will be spoilt for choice when it comes to SUVs around the R350k mark.

The Corolla Cross will be slotted between the Toyota C-HR, Urban Cruiser and the Toyota RAV4, giving customers more choice than ever when it comes to a family SUV.

As comprehensive as the SA range is, it’s lacking a sporty touch. Enter the GR Sport, which has just been announced by Toyota Asia. Like all GR Sport models in Toyota’s portfolio, this isn’t a performance version, but rather a mostly cosmetic upgrade.
