Toyota Corolla Cross (Rolla SUV)

South Africa’s 30 best-selling cars and SUVs in March 2022

In spite of all the challenges currently faced, March was a really good month for the South African new vehicle market.

The total market hit 50 607 units, the highest monthly total since October 2019, and while light commercial vehicle sales actually fell by 2.7% versus the same month last year, the passenger car market grew by an impressive 27.0% year-on-year.

A resurgent rental car industry gave car sales a welcome boost in March, accounting for 11.0% of all units sold.

Last month also saw the Toyota Corolla Cross surge to the top of the passenger car sales charts with an impressive volume of 2384, helping Toyota to achieve a record sales figure of 15 008 units overall.

As you’d expect the Volkswagen Polos also enjoyed a strong month, with the Vivo accounting for 2117 sales and the new Polo finding 1430 homes.

DRIVEN: Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is a roomy and efficient solution for SA buyers

The Corolla name has stood the test of time. It is one of the most popular vehicles on a global scale and remains so to this day. The Toyota Corolla is basically the Hilux of the sedan segment, however with more customer interest invested in compact crossovers, it was time for the Corolla to evolve. This is the Corolla Cross and it is the first foray into the crossover segment for the long standing nameplate.

A crossover Corolla… Why did it take so long to implement this truly fantastic idea? Since its introduction, the Toyota Corolla Cross has become extremely popular, in fact some 2 384 were sold just last month. The Corolla Cross has the right name and the right badge, but what’s it like to live with? Toyota South Africa recently handed me the keys to the top-spec Corolla Cross 1.8-litre XR Hybrid.

Before I delve into the Hybrid aspects of the car, let me run you through some of the things that I like about the Corolla Cross. Let’s start with the design.

Toyota has recently moved into a very good spot where their cars are looking great, sporty and angular. The Corolla sedan is an eye-catching thing and the Cross retains that appeal. The front features a large trapezoidal grille, flanked by long headlights with DRL technology.

Toyota South Africa warns of stock shortages affecting Hilux and other models

Last month’s tragic floods in KwaZulu-Natal have left a trail of destruction that’s set to affect the local motor industry for quite some time.

Apart from port-related disruptions, the flooding also forced Toyota to temporarily shut its local plant in Prospecton, south of Durban, following extensive damages to the facility.

And while Toyota South Africa still managed to sell 8952 vehicles in April, the company’s Sales and Marketing Vice President Leon Theron has warned of stock shortages in the months ahead.

“We are anticipating stock challenges with regards to our locally-built models such as Hilux, Fortuner, Corolla Cross and Quest, Hiace Ses’fikile and some Hino models,” Theron said.

The carmaker has not yet announced a timeline for reopening the plant, but TSAM CEO Andrew Kirby told Moneyweb that the company hoped to confirm dates within the coming week.

According to the financial publication, the recommencing of production will need to take place in phases, which include cleaning up, establishing temporary utilities and powering up machinery. Further to that, numerous repairs needed to be made and parts ordered, Kirby said.

Theron remarked that TSAM was grateful to the entire Toyota team and dealers across the country for their continued efforts over the past few weeks.

Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid

Toyota is expanding the Corolla Cross family by adding a healthy helping of performance and efficiency to an already incredible package. Based on the ever-popular Corolla sedan, the all-new 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid made its U.S. debut today, to provide even more options for entry SUV customers. The all-new 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid, along with the gas model launched in 2021, will be assembled in the U.S. at the new Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Alabama - a brand new facility that will have the capacity to roll out up to 150,000 Corolla Cross vehicles per year.

Fifth Generation Hybrid System with Increased Performance

Available exclusively with all-wheel drive (AWD), the Corolla Cross Hybrid maximizes the inherent potential of the high-strength TNGA-C platform, enabling the all-new model to achieve high-quality performance, a comfortable ride and outstanding spaciousness. What's more, the surprising cargo capacity gives it the versatility to accommodate life's adventures.

With the new Fifth Generation Toyota Hybrid System under the hood, coupled with the Electronic All-Wheel Drive system that's new to the Corolla nameplate, the new Corolla Cross Hybrid offers increased power and fuel-economy. With 194 horsepower and an 8.0 second 0-60 time, the Corolla Cross Hybrid is fun to drive while having an impressive manufacturer-estimated 37 combined miles per gallon for all grades.

2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Promises 37 MPG All Day Long

Toyota adds a hybrid drivetrain to the Corolla Cross.

For 2023, Toyota is adding an eleventh hybrid to its lineup in the form of the Corrolla Cross Hybrid. Already one of the most efficient crossovers on the market, the Corolla Cross Hybrid’s efficiency moves it to the top of the pack with 37 mpg.

While the Corolla Cross is based on the Corolla, the crossover version hasdifferent drivetrain setups. The Corolla Cross gets more power (because it’s heavier), and the new Corolla Cross Hybrid is now the most powerful Corolla Cross you can buy. With Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system and mandatory all-wheel drive, the Cross Hybrid makes 194 hp and is good for a promised 0-60 time around 8 seconds. Toyota says that the Corolla Cross Hybrid will deliver 37 mpg combined, no matter what trim level you choose.

This is the best new car you could buy as SA's 2022 Car of the Year is crowned

- Toyota wins big in the 2022 SAGMJ Car of the Year competition.
- Juror's honour Mercedes-Benz C-Class with excellence award.
- Nissan Navara thumps in bakkie segment award for Double-Cabs.

The 2022 South African Guild of Mobility Journalists' (SAGMJ) Car of the Year competition winners were announced via social media for the first time. Automotive influencers and content creators voted digitally to determine SA's best new models this year in several categories. Awards also handed out were for the best original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

Wheels24 editor Janine Van der Post is one of the 25 jury members of the SAGMJ Car of the Year competition, she shares her thoughts on this year's winners: "The jury members have been just as excited to see who the winners would be in each category of the 2022 competition.

"It's great to see the Toyota Corolla Cross as a worthy contender and the overall winner. It's made more people feel like it's a people's car wearing the crown. Though previous winners have all been outstanding and scored highly in their categories, the Corolla Cross is more in tune with what's the best car in the market - based on value for money, total sales, and just an all-round worthy winner.

"I'm also particularly pleased to see the Peugeot 208 as the Motor Enthusiasts Choice Award. It was one of my top choices in this year's competition. The Nissan Navara is another good surprise."

2022 South African Car of the Year: And the winner is…

The very first South African Car of the Year competition, 36 years ago, was won by the Toyota Corolla Twincam, with its newer-generation GLI Executive sibling taking overall victory three years later in 1989, and now history has repeated itself.

The Toyota Corolla Cross is South Africa’s 2022 Car of the Year, as judged by a jury of 25 automotive writers as selected by the members of the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists.

Having morphed into a crossover SUV format, the Toyota Corolla Cross is a clever adaptation to the times, and it also brings frugal hybrid motoring to a wider audience.

The Toyota Corolla Cross was selected as overall winner, and it also won the Compact Family and New-Energy categories of the competition.

Hey guys wife is looking to buy a new corolla Cross, lead times seem to have reduced think stock will be available in September. Any idea if dealers still offer discounts or is the demand to high? Menlyn confirmed they don't but the lady wasn't to interested in helping so just want to find out before I visit a few more dealers if its worth asking. Thanks

The JDM Toyota Corolla Cross Looks So Much Cooler Than the U.S. Model

It's basically the same vehicle, but small styling changes on the Japanese-market Corolla Cross give it a much stronger presence.

The Toyota Corolla Cross didn’t have to be a Corolla. It could have been any number of all-new crossover or compact SUV models from Toyota that bore little relation to the long-running compact. The Cross would have probably been a popular choice in the U.S. no matter what the badge called it, because crossovers are just that popular.

In Japan, the Corolla Cross gets a big “C” badge up front, shared across the full JDM Corolla lineup and giving the crossover a little more connection to the Corolla family. That badge, along with a couple of unique styling bits we don’t get, makes all the difference. The U.S. will eventually get the same styling on the 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid, but regular Cross models just don’t look as cool as their JDM counterparts.
