Toyota Corolla Cross (Rolla SUV)

Hi Good People,

I seriously need some advice (hope I'm posting in the correct thread :) )

So I have a 14 year old Ford Focus which has started to give me issues so I have decided to purchase a new vehicle.

It came down to the Toyota Corolla Cross XR (non hybrid), Toyota Corolla Cross GRS. I did test drive the cross xr but unfortunately the dealer did not have a GRS to test drive.

The dealer suggested that I go for the XR as oppose to the GRS because the gloss panels at the front will easily get scratched. Has anyone experienced this?

Has anyone test drove or own the the GRS model? Does it merit the 15k hike on the price tag? Aside from the cosmetics does the GRS give a better drive ?

Does anyone own the XR Version/ GRS Version, and can give me there personal short review of the vehicle? Was it a good choice? Do you regret purchasing it and rather purchased another vehicle?

My last question is Toyota CVT reliable?

I know it's a lot of questions, I just need some advice to point me in the right direction :)

The dealer is trying to sell you the stock they have on hand. Find a dealer that has the other one for you to test drive and make up your own mind...

These are the most searched for new and upcoming car models in South Africa

Which new models are South Africans looking forward to the most? Google data reveals that the new BMW X1 and M2 are the most searched for upcoming models, as researched by Auto Trader.

However, when it comes to searches involving new models, the Toyota Corolla Cross is still king, by a huge margin. The high-value compact crossover, which has been in short supply for most of this year due to the KZN flood damage, garnered an average of 49 800 Google searches per month in the past year.

I managed to find a dealer that had the Corolla Cross GRS available for test drive. He did try to sell me the demo model for 540k because he had no other GRS in stock I think he assumed I would be desperate enough to buy an over priced GRS lol. I did find other dealers that will be getting stock in October/November and are selling it at retail price (453k). So after test driving the XR and GRS, I definitely will be choosing the GRS.

These were South Africa’s 50 top-selling vehicles in September 2022

Despite all the economic doom and gloom, exacerbated by record levels of load shedding, rising interest rates and high fuel prices, South Africa’s new vehicle market continues to grow, albeit at a slightly slower pace.

According to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa), 47 786 new vehicles were sold in September 2022, representing an increase of 10.8% over the same month last year.

While passenger car sales have led the growth for most of this year, last month it was bakkies that took the lead, with a year-on-year sales growth of 15.3%, versus 9.7% for the cars and SUVs. The latter was fuelled by the rental car industry, which accounted for 18.9% of sales.

On the sales charts, it was the usual suspects that dominated, with the Toyota Hilux leading the way with 2 842 sales, followed by the Volkswagen Polo Vivo, at 2 473.

The Isuzu D-Max was the country’s second most popular bakkie in September, with a volume of 1 968, while the Ford Ranger managed 1 604 sales, which is impressive considering that the current model will be replaced soon.

5 Cheapest Hybrid Cars in SA

Here are the 5 cheapest hybrid cars in South Africa! If you are considering buying a hybrid car, you now have some options to consider!

In recent years, hybrid cars have typically been a pricy proposition for new car buyers and as such the technology hasn’t really taken off in South Africa and Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) cars remain dominant.

However, global demand for hybrid cars, including micro-hybrid, mild-hybrid, full-hybrid and Plug-in hybrids, is on the increase. China and the Asia Pacific region is leading in terms of hybrid adoption and hybrid uptake is currently surging in Europe too alongside Electric Vehicles (EVs).

Globally, the top hybrid car brands include Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Kia.

Earlier in 2020, Toyota announced that its Prospecton assembly facility in KZN would produce the Corolla Cross, including the Corolla Cross Hybrid, which is currently South Africa’s cheapest hybrid car. More so, with fuel prices surging to new highs in the first half of 2022, demand for more efficient vehicles (including hybrids) has risen sharply and Toyota will look to capaitalise on that demand with additional hybrid products such as the Corolla Hybrid and the RAV4 Hybrid.

Sadly though, Toyota experienced a major setback earlier this year with the floods in KZN causing massive destruction at its Prospecton facility but thankfully production is now resuming with full-scale production expected in September 2022.

Prior to the above developments, the now discontinued Toyota Prius was once one of the cheapest hybrid cars you could buy in South Africa, but with the recent hybrid introductions from Toyota and the launch of the new Honda Fit, buyers have more choice now than ever before.

Please note that pricing is accurate as of October 2022.
