Another hideous Toyota heading our way soon, regardless of looks I am sure it will do well as it says Toyota at the back.

Toyota South Africa Motors has confirmed that the Etios range, set to slot in where the wallet-friendly Tazz left off, will arrive on the local market on May 21.

The Etios, which will be offered in both three-door hatchback and four-door saloon body styles, has been designed with the demands of budget-conscious drivers in mind but does not rely on what TMSA’s general manager of marketing communications Kerry Roodt describes as “hand-me-down technology.”

Although pricing has yet to be confirmed, the model’s placement is likely to put it up against the likes of the Ford Figo, Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10 and VW Polo Vivo. Toyota claims, however, that the Etios will be a class up from such competition in terms of size with a 2 550 mm wheelbase.

Stylistically, the Etios features Toyota’s familial “smiling” grille, a sculpted bonnet and a low character line that follows the contours of the doors. Toyota describes the hatchback’s rear as being similar in visual execution to that of the RunX, while the saloon’s boot will reportedly accommodate 595 dm3 of luggage. Both the Xi and XS model grades will feature colour-coded bumpers and 14-inch steel wheels, but the latter will also receive colour coding for the grille and door handles, as well as chrome exterior trim accents.

Manufactured at Toyota’s Bangalore plant, the Etios is powered by a 1,5-litre petrol engine with twin cams and four valves per cylinder. This unit develops 66 kW and 132 N.m of torque, enough to propel the saloon from standstill to 100 km/h in around 12 seconds.

Apart from everything else one can say about this lil' tin can... that interior!

Ergonomics by blender? Did the interior designers indulge in a night of heavy drinking, interspersed with rounds of Pin the Vent on the Dashboard? That's really just horrible.

The Japs getting uglier as each new model comes out it seems.

FYI - The Etios was created to compete with Tata and Mahindra in the Indian market so you can imagine the refinement.

Also Toyota has failed to submit the Etios for Euro NCAP testing so it has no rating for safety...perhaps they know something???

I thought the Toyota AYGO is the one competing with the likes of the Ford Figo, Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10 and VW Polo Vivo?

Nope.

They Aygo is direct competition for the BMW C1.

Toyota is making their cars look too similar nowadays! Auris, RunX, etc all look the same to me

66kW from a 1500cc engine?!
The smaller 1400cc engine in the i20 puts out 73Kw and 136 Nm.

I could understand 66kW if it was a long stroke/high torque engine but it doesn't even have a torque advantage either.
Then factor in Highveld altitudes and it's going to take ages to get this sowing machine up to 100km/h.

"A recent spate of crash tests have cast some big doubts over the safety credentials of small cars made in India, many of which are sold in South Africa.

Crash tests performed by by Global NCAP in the last few years have seen most of these small hatchbacks grabbing headlines with zero-star safety ratings.

What wasn't so widely publicised, however, was that one of South Africa's best selling cars, the Toyota Etios, actually achieved a rather commendable four-star rating when it was tested earlier in 2016.

The Etios attained a four-star Global NCAP rating.
What wasn't so widely publicised, however, was that one of South Africa's best selling cars, the Toyota Etios, actually achieved a rather commendable four-star rating when it was tested earlier in 2016.

Global NCAP performed a frontal crash test at 64km/h and rated the Toyota's structure as "stable" and "able to withstand further loadings." The test unit was fitted with dual front airbags, which offered good protection to the heads of both the driver and passenger.

The only downsides were that the lower dashboard structure only provided marginal protection to the occupants' knees and that the child dummy, mimicking a three year old, exceeded the forward excursion limit, resulting in a mere two-star child protection rating, with 20 points out of 49, versus 13 points out of 16 for adult occupant protection.

Why airbags are so important

The recent Global NCAP tests highlight the importance of airbags in protecting occupants in frontal collisions.

To that end, the previous-generation Ford Figo and current Volkswagen Polo both failed to score a single star when tested back in 2014, and Global NCAP put that down to them not being fitted with airbags (a common practice among entry-level cars in India) as the pair were deemed to have strong structures. A Polo fitted with airbags was later tested and achieved four stars.

Lacking such structural integrity was the Datsun Go, which Global NCAP said performed so badly that even the fitment of an airbag would not help matters. The SA-bound Renault Kwid and Hyundai i10 were also found to have "unstable" structures."
