Fwiw the facelift model in India & such looks more upmarket with an infotainment system & a digital instrument cluster.

I'm guessing the next gen of Etios would be a huge step up Ito build quality, refinement & NVH.

Yup - the Etios sold in Brazil also has the upgraded & modernised dash & interior, compared to the dismal, drab & outdated version we get here in SA.

Toyota SA tweaks Etios and confirms new ‘Sport’ derivative

At the end of April 2018, we reported that Toyota South Africa Motors had quietly added a new “Sport” hatchback derivative to its Etios range. Now, the local arm of the Japanese automaker has confirmed this new variant, while also rolling out minor updates to the rest of the Etios line-up.

As previously reported, the limited-edition Etios Sport is offered in Glacier White or Retro Red paint, each paired with a black roof and pillars. The grille, side-mirror caps and rear spoiler have all also been finished in black.

Furthermore, this model runs on 15-inch alloys, borrowed from the Etios Cross and wrapped in 185/60/R15 rubber. Round back, you’ll find a lone “Sport” badge.

Despite this moniker, the new model (like all other variants in the Etios range) is powered by a naturally aspirated 1,5-litre four-cylinder engine, which sends 66 kW and 132 N.m to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox.

So, what about the rest of the range (including the sedans)? Well, a new “Optitron” instrument cluster has been fitted to all models, complete with a digital tachometer on the left and a “full-sweep” speedometer on the right.

Meanwhile, the entry-level Xi model gains electric windows at the rear.

New Sport model joins revised Toyota Etios range

Toyota has added a pinch of salt and a few extra spices to its Indian-built Etios with the introduction of a limited edition Sport model, which ushers in a few small running changes across the range.

Like the Yaris Bi-tone that was launched a few years ago, the Etios Sport gets a two-tone external paint job where a black roof and C-pillars contrast with one of the two available paint colours - Glacier White or Retro Red.

The wheels also got the dual-tone memo, with the Sport wearing black and silver 15-inch alloys pinched from the Etios Cross, while the chrome strip that you usually find on the Etios grille makes way for an all-black colour scheme, and that courtesy extends to the door mirrors and roof spoiler as well.

Spec upgrades

All Etios models receive a new Optitron instrument cluster with orange backlighting, while the entry Xi model now gets rear electric windows - previously they were only fitted upfront.

As before, all versions are fitted with an aircon, audio system with Bluetooth, reach-adjustable steering, dual front airbags and ABS brakes - not forgetting that it received four stars in Global NCAP’s crash tests.

The Etios is backed up by a two-year/30 000km service plan and three-year/100 000km warranty.

The sole engine choice is the familiar 1.5-litre normally aspirated unit that produces 66kW and 132Nm.

We took a brief spin on the Sport’s Gauteng based launch, serving as a reminder that this is a solid little car that’s easy to drive, and the free-revving engine provides reasonably brisk performance that’s pretty much as good as you could expect at this end of the market.

That is the Sport, what more do you want? A better engine, performance? The meaning of the word Sport meaning is lost on some manufacturers.

Don't worry though, you will get red stitching on the seats with the update in about two to three years.

Will the next Toyota Etios be Suzuki based?

Bengaluru, India - Following last year’s memorandum of agreement to explore potential joint ventures, Toyota and Suzuki have now announced a range of joint projects and some of them might even have implications for the South African product mix. Interestingly, the projects announced thus far revolve around the Indian market, and one of them will see Toyota’s Indian division - officially called Kirloskar Motors - produce vehicles developed by Suzuki, and to be sold under both the Toyota and Suzuki brand names. What’s even more interesting, for us at least, is the announcement that some of these cars will be exported to Africa and other markets. At this stage there is no official word on what products will be exported, however, nor whether South Africa is included in the plan for that matter.

According to numerous reports, Toyota will produce versions of the Suzuki Baleno and Vitara at its Indian plant. But it’s also not too much of a stretch to speculate that somewhere down the line Toyota might turn to Suzuki for help replacing its aging Etios - which Toyota Kirloskar currently exports to South Africa. Were that to happen, wouldn't Suzuki’s latest Swift be the ideal donor car? Once again, it’s pure speculation at this point, but we can think of far worse ideas. It also remains to be seen how far Toyota will go to differentiate the styling of its Suzuki-based products, although we’d certainly like to assume that both companies know better than to badge-engineer the old fashioned way.
