Toyota GT86

By far the most exciting Toyota to come along in a very long time. Definitely would like to test drive one of these.

When are your'll receiving the first test units?


I miss that area!! Especially the Sunday afternoon stroll on the beach with the dogs :cry:
 
What are its competitors? Referring to the Toyota here.

No I'm not spending my inheritance on it, I'm just... 'browsing'.
 
It looks good but the power and torque seems a bit low for the price. It peaks at a very high RPM whilst a GTI has more torque and also peaks below 2000RPM. Big difference in driving feel there and the GTI costs only a little more.

GTI:
Power Output 155kw@5300RPM
Torque 280nm@1700RPM

GT86:
Power Output 147kw@7000RPM
Torque 205nm@6000RPM

I'm not saying that the GTI is a better car. It's just an example.

You're comparing different segments though. A 320i is worse off than both, but costs more.

This is what i have been trying to explain to people since last year until i'm blue in the fking face... "This is a FUN car!" Thats all it's supposed to be, and exactly what it IS! I could literally shoot myself if i hear another person moan about how it's only a 2.0L, it's an N/A car, why make a sports car in those specs.. blah blah blah.. Subaru/Toyota wanted, as Chris Harris says, a car that looks at the driver, and makes driving fun again!

You dont need to be Michael Schumacher to get it around a corner at high speed. It's composed, it handles well and i can guarantee you will have more fun driving this than any Porsche or Ferrari. Note the word "FUN''!

Thats just my 2c anyway :)
 
I agree with you, I have the 2.0 Ltr N/A Type R and it puts a smile on my face everyday. It's not the fastest car out there, but it makes me happy and I love it. And I am sure that is the same feeling you will get when driving this beaut!!!

It's no Lambo but it isn't exactly a slouch either. I think it's a pretty damn affordable sportscar that won't break the bank with regards to maintenance either. What else is out there in that price range that competes with this? The closest I can think of would be the MX-5?

There's not much competition in that range for N/A 2.0l engines with decent power. So I can see why people will go for it. However there are a few 2.0l turbo cars in that range with much more power. A3, GTI, Focus, OPC to name a few. I know people who will go for the N/A to avoid the high repair costs with turbo cars. When buying new though the car will be under warranty so turbo vs N/A is not an issue.

Out of warranty I would definitely go N/A. There are great options if buying used. I picked up a 350z for R200k about 2 years ago. It still feels like I just got it :) Services are cheap (R2k) and it's in a different league from the cars above. Sounds a lot better too.

All the cars you mention are FWD... So no... They dont even compare to the new GT86, not even slightly.

The point you make about the N/A vs Turbo is a very valid one though! "Toybaru" has a winner here me thinks!

Sorry I missed this, I'm on a training course until Friday afternoon, so no net!

I could walk to work, straight across the golfcourse to the dealership! :D That would be wasting my use of the company car, however, so I am forced to drive! ;) :p

First units have been sold, so heaven knows when they will be available for demo's!

To answer the consumption questions - the latest Subaru 2.0 litre has been designed specifically around fuel consumption, so it should be pretty good for a 2.0 sports car - highly unlikely to be more than 8 to 9 litres/100.

I 'think' the GT86 is about 200kg lighter than the GTI which makes a big difference. I also think the target market is different for the GT86 compared to the GTI. Kinda like a Lotus Elise thing.

Edit: I can see these turning into tuners car with lots of after market options. Sooner or later someone is gonna come out with turbo kits pushing 300kW, should be easy to do from that 2l scooby engine.

Exactly! People simply look at numbers when it comes to kw and torque and forget all about power to weight ratio.

This car is going to be stunning - and yes, the "go faster" stuff already exists, and much of it will simply bolt on.
