I have a "not so honest" contractor I have to work with. They claimed to have sent me an e-mail on (say) 24 June 2013 which I never received. I claim that they never sent it to me because if they did, chances are I would have seen it in my inbox. So they subsequently forwarded me the e-mail with my name in the To box and the date being 24 June 2013. I reckon they didn't send it and added my name to the recipients list. I have all the reason in the world that they are boelshirting me (and others).

I am using Lotus Notes 8.5 and need a way to trace the route of the e-mail back to origin showing the original date and recipients. Help please

Can you contact anyone else (trustworthy) in the recipient list and ask them to forward you the original email?

Yes, I have already done that and confirmed they changed the info. But I want to have electronic proof also.

Email is not fool proof communication. That's it. Once you know that, then life is so much better to live.

I can't use this, but thank you for your comment

Im not sure with lotus notes,

But on outlook, you can attach the sent email as an attachment, does dates you cannot change, future more, you can look at the actual headers, that will give you the exact date and time the email was sent...

Thanks Keegan. They merely forwarded the mail and the moment you do that, the the header is editable. But I will ask them to attach the original e-mail rather than forward it.

Yeah, that attached 1 will tell you immediately if it was sent. Also if it was sent and you did not receive it, you can ask your IT admin to check the server logs if it reached the server.

Its easy to see original date in outlook if you open the mail in a text editor like notepad.I had the same when a colleague claimed they sent me the email and i never got it, then he sent me the email with dates changed, but im too smart for that lol

Yep,you need the original Mail as an attachment, headers can be checked then,or ask for the mail to be saved as an .eml from their mail client, put on a flash drive or cd

Best is to contact your e-mail service provider and ask to support this matter.

Our company only communicate with tickets due to reasons like this where our outsourced partners bridge SLA’s by mostly editing documents (especially communication) when not meeting our and the clients agreements. Everything we do is ticketed -> synced with our CRM (customer/partners have access) -> Encrypted and stored in our docs system and compared to our Gmail Apps and logs.

Nobody lies, that’s it. I live by ethics.

Thanks guys ... will follow up with our IT. As an alternative ask them to send the mail as an attachment or .eml, but then they will suspect I am on their case - and I am building up a case against them for all the lies they spread.

Were there any gmail addresses in the original email?

Those people can get a full/detailed header on date, who, ip etc....

Unfortunately no gmail.

Why not get one of the other recipients to forward tje mail in such a manner?

Ask for the Original Mail as .eml so IT can look for the MessageID

Pop a mail to your mail provider and ask them for a copy of the delivery logs from that sender for that day.

Logs dont lie :)

/me goes to edit logs.

+1 on the logs.
Had issues where someone tried to bum a website, and I simply went to the logs. Could find everything they did :p
