Hi chaps, the info in this thread is similar to what i need except im the recipient. An email is doing the rounds in my company at the moment and the Chairman is looking for the right person to hang. We have a case number and the email is from a Yahoo server. Are there companies who specialize in this type of thing or can we trace it ourselves? Also how is Yahoo and their ilk about releasing information about their users?

You could always try and bait the sender and offer him some incentive (A good prize etc Beta product test etc) in order for him to relinquish his personal details but you will have to be sharp and make it look 100% legit. That is assuming he is staill using the email address.

Unless the sender made a noob mistake your chairman won't be hanging anyone anytime soon. Maybe hire a private detective w/ computer skills. Realistically though its a waste of time.

Update : Telkom, Yahoo and IS have all responded and have promised to do something. All i have to do is provide header and IP's.

Telkom saix had this to say "The SAPS needs to serve a Sec 205 Subpoena upon Telkom SA Ltd. In the Sec 205 the need to add the IP address, Date and Time Gmt+0200. That information can be obtained from the orginal header information of the original mail received."

Anyone familiar with the procedure and likely outcome?

First port of call is Yahoo. You need to know over what type of internet connection Yahoo was accessed. No point in flooding Telkom with lawyers if it was sent from an MTN 3g card. Once you've ID'd the network then you need a subpoena on them. That should trace it to account holder of the internet connection it is. That could be the end...or it could point to a public wifi zone which would make things difficult/impossible depending on the type of wifi spot.

Getting SAPS to serve the subpoena is probably also not going to be straight forward.

If the boss is willing to throw some $$$ at the problem then I'd suggest contacting a forumite here called dominic. He has a legal & communication background. He'll know what to do or know someone who does. Not sure whether he is on the forum regularly, but I'm 90% sure rpm has his cell #. Dunno whether either of them wants to get involved though.

Sure thing.

So is this the forum where we help criminals?
Even if the contents of this mysterious email are illegal, its already done. Regardless of what we tell him its to late to cover his friend's legal or otherwise tracks.

Where do we draw the line?
That is thankfully for each to decide on his/her own. Unless it breaks forum rules which isn't the case here.
