Hi guys. One of my friends down in Cape Town got a laptop from me on his Upgrade last year. It has Windows Vista on it and he phoned me this morning complaining that someone on there is downloading a crap load of data even when it is sitting idle. I activated a 110 meg bundle for him on Thursday and its all gone and he has basically only done a few emails so far.

What program can we use that can show us what exactly is pulling data? I am no expert when it comes to things like this and I use Ubuntu at home so I dont know what is out there for Windoze.

Can you guys suggest something that is realy easy peasy and that will show us the program names that is downloading stuff that he is not aware off?

It's best to do a netstat or add a firewall like Zone Alarm to block any incoming connections. He will get a pop up asking to accept a connection all the time , but at least it will give some idea of what is running.

Thanks guys. Just spoke to him. We checked and his windows update manager is set to "notify first" so it is not that. His AVG anit virus is set to daily updates and if I remember correctly from I was still on the "dark side" and using windows with my lappie, those updates can be pretty large at times....but still not sure if it is only that that is eating his megs...so I have told him to install netlimiter. Guess what he asks me???????................"HOW BIG IS THE DOWNLOAD???!!!!" hahahahaha......my poor friend....i love him to bits.

I said I will download it tonight and tell him what size it is.

Thanks guys. I hope we can find the nasty little piece of software that is doing this.

Depending on what other software he has loaded (and drivers for hardware being used) it could be any of these programs trying to update itself, not just Windows and AVG (which is very small unless it is a total version update).

My bet is on driver updates.

But wont that be done with the windoze updates? It is a Fuk@ksu Siemens laptop.....do they have their own update managers for drivers?

Not necessarily done with windows, no. Each one also has it's own update periodic setting, eg HP printer, Nokia PC Suite interface, Nero, Adobe, Corel Draw, etc.

bleh....I swear.....if he was here I would wipe his hard drive and install Ubuntu on his @ss :-)

I have loaded a Advanced bundle so at least he wont have to stress about out of bundle charges so much anymore. I HATE WINDOZE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *rant over*
