Tracking device fitted to private vehicle

Afternoon everybody. I am employed as a sales rep in the transport industry.As part of my employment I have to provide my own private car and my employer provides me with a petrol allowance via a petrol card.We do not recieve a car allowance or any form of payment for the use of my private car. My employer now wants to fit a tracking device to my private car to track my movements during the day (and maybe at night etc). I am not happy with this as I feel that this is my private car and not a asset of the company. I also feel that it infringes on my right to privacy etc. I also feel that as my employer does not pay for my car they cannot insist to fit a tracking device. I feel if they want to check up on my movements during the day etc they must either devise other ways of doing so , or pay me for the use of my car, or provide me with a company vehicle.

Can somebody pls refer me to the relevant pieces of legislation that I can use to counter the organisation's insistence to fit a tracking device?

To the OP... find another job.
It is clearly a device to keep track on you. Let me guess.. you have to clock in and clock out aswell and they have cameras all over the show?
 
Stop sleeping with the boss' wife and he wont need to keep tabs on you :D

Seriously - You don't need legislation. That would imply that if they wanted to enforce it - they too would be requiring legislation of their own. I doubt such exists. Check your employment contract. If its not in there... They can go shyte.
 
You could benefit from a insurance saving, and by getting your car back if stolen but this rarely happens and the car is mostly ripped appart by the thieves looking for the unit unless they have access to the installation itself.
Are you not working and have things to hide.
Are you doing things in your private time that your employer wouldn't approve of.

These are just things that come to mind.

My company did the same. It is private property. Just deny and cite damage ocures with the instalation and your car will not be worked on. they must find different means.
 
I'm sure you can get a portable GPS tracker that you can hand in to the boss after every shift.

Crazy argument. The tracking companies only look at your car after it is reported stolen, which is not the same argument. They also have procedures and processes to follow.
 
Just put a technical hurdle in front of them.

"Sure, as long as it switches off automatically after hours and when I am on leave, and of course you would need to repeatedly demonstrate it doing that."

You get units that the company can track online.
 
Another thing: Would it ping its position when the car is off?

I had trackers with panic buttons fitted to my cars when still in Joburg. Though all but one have since been sold and the newer ones are thankfully tracker-free, the seldom-used Voyager still has a GPS+GSM unit, which pings its position and vital stats every 10 seconds.

That car can be unused for months. When I do get round to taking it for a spin the battery is run down by the tracker unit. Now I have to attach a battery conditioner.

Just a small additional consideration, though it's not a convincing argument.

My companies installs trackers that you can check online. Reports every 200m , 120s or 15 degrees heading change which covers basically all sorts of travel.

Harsh breaking, acceleration, AC detection, passenger door sensor are all optional extras. As is a business milage switch (SARS logbook).

Web based software. Will post you a screenshot of trip replay

Ok, I believe you, but the car is being tracked by professionals who don't have any personal link to the owner like a boss would have.

There is SVR (stolen vehicle and recovery) and proper vehicle tracking. Our customers basically track their own vehicles and are able to analyse the data and reports themselves

Like I said you get units that the individuals can track and manage.

If they are paying for your fuel, they need to ensure that the bulk of the allowance they pay you is got company use. For all they know you could be abusing your allowance.

For SARS travel allowance needs some proof . This is the easiest way to sort out the logbook is by using a tracking unit.
