Previously the Dealer-Guides was distributed by Mead and McGrouter, a few years already it has been taken over by TransUnion.
These Values are a guide only as it says on the first page, they are extensively used by Dealers as a guide - but Insurers and Financiers as well as Estate lawyers and Actuaries use it too.
TransUnion has Copy Right and can distribute it to who-ever they want to and in what form they want, and they can also choose who not to send it too or to make it available too.
It used to be possible for dealers to get it in Electronic Form too, though only on a Palm or Palm Pilot, I have not used it as such.
You can also get it downloaded to your Pc if you are a registered dealer and then you are not allowed to distribute their information without prior agreement from TransUnion.
This website http://www.book-value.co.za/bookvalue.php
Let us put it to the test, I have a Current Dealers Guide in front of me.
Let us take the 2009 Audi 1.8T Atraction on Page 32 at the bottom as an example, it was introduced in 2008 and is still running in production.
I indicated no extras what so ever, gave mileage as average as it appears in the back of the guide, and scored it a condition of 9/10.
As you can see in the Capture, the Value they give as "Book-Value" (R267 360), is
R 26 000 above Retail value!, and is in Fact more or less precisely the value indicated here in my book as the best Retail Value Achieved in the Stats they (TransUnion) used based on four vehicles in this case in the guide.
Guess what Trade Value is, the value every dealer is going to look up when you phone them, the one that dealers common refer to as "book-value"?
It is R 219 800.
It is my opinion that the site is operated by someone who needs their customers to believe that their cars are worth more than what they really are.
Now who would that be?
Insurers.
