Nah, no forever cars for me. I’m not committing to anything that much lol.
 
Ok so here’s the hotly-anticipated (and controversial) update I promised. WeBuyCars offered the most for my BMW, but I still had a R30 000 shortfall even so. I wasn’t looking forward to paying in R30 000 cash, or the worse alternative of loading it onto the new deal. Then I remembered that my girlfriend had seen that WeBuyCars offered R30 000 trade-in assist on selected models. See, I told you it would be controversial ;)

I did a complete filtering on the WBC website to only show the best-rated (Platinum) cars in Gauteng with low-mileage and everything else I wanted … and had only about eight options left. I scrutinised the Dekra report for each, and found one option which rose to the top which had a pristine Dekra report (everything “Very good” and no fault codes). Oh and remaining manufacturer warranty and even a free service left. I held my breath and clicked on Apply.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you my new Hyundai Grand Creta. Seven seats is not something I need, but the massive boot is something special with the two rear seats folded down:

Congrats, it sure is left-field. NGL, I did not expect you in an Indian-made vehicle coming from your Bimmer.

It sounds like you did all your DD so you should be sorted for a long time.

You should be sorted for space for a while lol

Yeah dude, I had to re-think Indian cars too thanks to Suzuki. I came extremely close to getting one, except I couldn’t face having a four-speed automatic box.

The underpinnings of the Hyundai Grand Creta are way better: a 2-litre nat asp engine and a better gearbox with the correct number of gears.

If this car journey has been defined by anything, is it has forced me to open my mind and reconsider brands, car features and even WBC. I dealt with a few shocking people at WBC, but the core people on my deal were all fantastic. And the car itself looks super-clean: I have no idea what the former owner did to keep it looking this new, I need the tips lol.

And yes, FiestaST, just for you, I’ll send an extra couple photos ;)

Some 2c thoughts.

- The Grand comes with the digital dash, the non-Grand Creta does not IIRC, it lifts the cabin.
- I like the two tone seats, sets it off more premium on face value.
- No ambient lighting, was. not expecting it, you will have to "survive" no longer having it vs the 5er.
- Physical handbrake, depends who you ask but generally regarded as good vs an electronic jobbie.
- Interior dome lights are halogen not LED, not a train-smash.
- I like old school t-bar auto lever.
- Does it not have a 3-point centre lapbelt + centre headrest? I can't make out clearly. That is the number 1 go-to to cut costs.
- 3rd Row of seats folded down (flat), we can see stacks of space.
- Rear LED's look good, fake exhaust look less so.

Not schitting on your decision, just sharing my 2c, take as relevant.

You mentioned the low kilos, what are they?

Once again congrats! I assume you will keeping this one a while lol

Yeah 100% dude, I got the “Executive” and not the “Elite”: that trim has some extra niceties like a full digital dash, sunroof and interior ambient lighting. As it was, I got this car for a really awesome price from WBC, even before you scrubbed an extra R30 000 off for the trade assist. I’m not sure how Hyundai justifies charging R500 000 for this car new, but for what I got it (R370 000) … I’m more than happy! Mileage is 50 000km, so way better than my BMW’s 135 000km. Did I mention I got a fuel consumption average of 5.5 litres/100km coming back on the highway, at a steady 120km/h?

To be clear, this car was not my first choice (BMW X5 would be that), or the most expensive one I could afford. It was my “sensible” choice, and I wanted that for the next few years: it gives me what I need.
 
Congrats man, I am sure you will be very happy. I was also looking at the grand Creta for awhile now, purely for the space. Let me know how it drives etc

Well, I think it drives like what it is: a upper-crossover-SUV. It’s no powerhouse or magical pillowride, but it’s novel for me to have that little bit of extra ride height compared to my BMW, and it undoubtedly is a softer ride as well (BMW Msport suspension and run-flat tyres were never accused of soaking up the bumps). What I’m most pleased by is its two-litre engine has enough grunt and doesn’t feel anemic in Gauteng, which is the common complaint against nat asp engines up here. Coming from a 530i, having any kind of performance at all that doesn’t make me pull my hair out is a great accomplishment, soooo … I’m delighted that I’m satisfied lol. You definitely feel the missing turbocharger at low revs, but when I consider I almost bought a Suzuki Baleno, this is a LOT more car. Best of all, the family is delighted by all the space! The rear seat headroom and legroom is extremely generous.
 
It’s a lot nicer on the inside than I expected looking at it from the outside.
