Trade-in value on cheaper car?

Pity the Up is under powered from what you guys say. Like @SauRoNZA says a turbo version would have been perfect.

Reason I'm fixated on VW is their excellent mechanic. So many horror stories about after sales service, bad workmanship etc. Seems silly but that's why I'd prefer VW.

Why not just get front PDC fitted on the Golf?

It will save you a whole chunk of money and solve the problem.

You know @SauRoNZA i have never bumped the car even once. When I think I've backed right into the garage there's about 1m of empty space left

That thing you mention sounds interesting. Does it work for the front and the back of the car? If so, you have probably saved me a huge amount of anxiety, never mind money.

PDC - Park Distance Control.



These little circles you've probably seen on newer cars, front and back. They sense when obstacles are close and slowly start beeping fast as you get close to an object. Give you a good indication of how close you are and makes parking easier.

You should be able to get them fitted, not sure what that would cost you. Here's an example of the kit from Autostyle (One in Randburg, one near the CBD - probably others).

Autostyle PDC kit - R450 - Honestly for that price I don't know to expect quality-wise but it's an indication of what it is.

So what exactly is the issue then? Why the worry?

I’m amazed the Golf 7 doesn’t have Park Distance Control as standard but then I guess it is a VW.

My shitty Kia has it as well as a reverse camera.

Going the VW route should be R4500 or so I would imagine. There are always third party options but not sure if they can integrate as well as the OEM versions.

It’s worth mentioning that changing the car is unlikely to change your depth perception in any way.

In fact I wouldn’t be at all surprised if you end up parking even further away from things.

Didn't know that trade-in values vary but it makes sense.

What puts me off is as soon as you mention the possibility of a new car they all cluster around asking for contact details and then hound you daily about whether you've made a decision or not.

Also it will be a balancing act because most of them give R10k off the purchase price which I'd lose on a trade-in. Think I'll ask a colleague to visit webuycars.

Look at it another way, you don’t need to buy a car but are looking at it as an option, which puts you in the position to negotiate more easily as well as reject any hounding from a salesmen. If the deal isn’t to your liking just walk away...

The new Polo is based in the MkVII Golf (MQB platform) chassis so the size difference is negligible although it is a great car and VW currently has an issue where Polo sales are limiting Golf sales. VW’s are unfortunately priced at a premium compared to rivals with the exception of brands like Audi, so you will get better value for money elsewhere although the build quality and general feel of a VW is superior.

As for fitting PDC to your current car, get some quotes as it isn’t always an easy retrofit especially if you want to go with an OEM system. Most cars these days simply don’t have the hardware or software if the option is not fitted when the car is manufactured. There are other options to assist you parking in your garage but they won’t help much when you are parking elsewhere.

I drive a MkVII Golf but have never had an issue with it’s size coming from an A4 Avant but I do have front and rear PDC and a rear view camera which makes life a lot easier.

Any ideas what VW would give as a trade-in on my 2014 Golf 7 Comfortline. It's in excellent condition with 42000k on the clock and full service history. 4 new tyres fitted September 2018.

I'm a terrible driver and it's too big for me so I'm thinking of getting a new Up but don't want to get into debt.

The up will be fine. It's not like you are currently driving the GTI or something you have a 1.4

You probably just have to get used to the car and learn how close you can get to things. Practice going into a garage especially at an angle if you can, but have a friend outside the car to guide you.

I would only trade it in if it gave me a deposit to put on the other vehicle. Otherwise, you're most likely to have a shortfall on a smaller vehicle, which you will be over-paying for. (Shortfall most likely to be loaded onto the new vehicle's price).

I agree, the TSI is till much more powerful than the Up. How about other small but a bit more powerful cars like your Suzukis, Fiestas, Mazda 2?

You're right @thechamp, the car is fast and gorgeous to drive. Downgrading will be irritating speed wise but I could live with that if I had to. Bad finishes and/or build quality - no way.

Hmmm if I do buy first choice would be VW or as @Dan C suggested, maybe a Jazz. Friend has a new Suzuki Sport so I'll have a little drive.
