How is Trafalgar's quality these days?
I also wondered, from folks who have been to England/Ireland/Scotland in December/January, is it really very cold? I mean, I can see the current temps are in the lowish pluses. Is it such that you cannot spend any considerable amount of time outside? SA 8 degrees is not the same as UK 8 degrees, I suspect ...

It's really not nice, cold, muddy, a bit of snow, but more a dirt slushy. You don't really want to be outside, and everything is either moldy, damp or just wet.
Layering is essential, so is an umbrella.
Their tea is sh_te, and their beer is worse. If you want to visit England, somewhere between May and September is probably your best bet.
Also, get ready to blow through your budget in 75% of your trip. Tourist tax is REAL.
If you want a snowy Xmas continental europe, Northern France and up is where you want to look. If you want a South African type winter, find Rome and work sideways. Think Greece, Cyprus, Tuscany, Southern Spain and Southern Portugal. If you can put your toes in the Mediterranean, that's a South African type winter.

Thanks for the insights! So thinking that if you go in Dec/Jan will be cheaper/better than the British summer is not really the case then, it seems.

Simply put, saving R10,000 and being stuck in two weeks of horrible weather, doesn't seem like a great trade-off. Shoot for June, July, September or the first two weeks of October.

I think organised holidays from the 80s now you have many other options to help research your holiday like the internet things like booking.com and trip adviser and apps to help translate.
