Traffic congestion? Google Map it

I just wish there's a way to download (not cache) a South African map with google maps on our Android phones. It's so frustrating to use where I'm driving through an area with no 3G, or my data runs out. And it's really annoying to pay for bandwidth, to drive the same route on a regular basis even if it's cached.

I am confused. What is the difference between caching and downloading the map??? I thought if you cache it then it gets downloaded to the phone for offline use later?

The problem with caching, at least the way google maps does it, is that it only caches a 10mile radius, and can only store 10 caches which doesn't cover a large area. But, you still need to be online to navigate even if is caches, it's just a bit quicker.

On a Nokia phone, for example (I'm sure other phones have the same functionality) you can download the whole South African map and don't need internet connectivity to navigate

Andriod / googlemaps doesn't have such an option

I updated my Google Maps last night and the 10 mile thing has been done away with. You can now download all the way from Pretoria through Joburg down to Vanderbijlpark just stopping by Sasolburg. It even gives you the estimated file size of the download. Bout 85megs.

I have used this new traffic feature heavily in the past week, and it has saved me a few times! :)
