In 2014 December I had an incident where I registered on paymyfines.co.za and paid two fines on my cars. There were no outstanding fines after that.

Today I get another SMS saying there is an outstanding fine for me, I log on and see it was on the 15th of Novemeber. My first thought is that I have not received a notice about it within 30 days so it can't be legal. Then I check the historical tracking data on my car and see that between the 9th of November and the 17th of November I did not use it at all. This is normal as I cycle to and from work and weekends we use my wife's car.

Then I go back to the fine and read it again.... it was in 2012 :p Clearly BS as I paid all outstanding fines in my cars in 2014 and I am pretty sure fines expire after a given time. Will be cool to see how this pans out.

I think fines expire after 5 years, summons etc. take 30 years.

Just keep an eye on them that they do not turn into Warrants of Arrest or summonseseses...

We also had one of those old ancient fines, just left it and eventually it disappeared off the site. And the smses, pfft.

Actually just realised the fine was for my old car that I sold in 2014, CL 49485. WTF are those guys smoking.

Ignore until a summons is received. As long as it's not a fine that is handed to you by the cop(which is a summons itself) or it shows on the fines website as warrant for arrest issued.

Fines apparently only expire after 30yrs but most municipalities right them off as unrecoverable after 5yrs.

True, but if there was a fine outstanding on the car then they probably would not have let me sold the car 2 years after the offence?

I see a fine on my ID from 2012 - metro cop in Josi pulled me over and issued me a speeding fine. Thought it was quite dodgy, didnt see the laser scanner, nor the actual speed i got trapped at, and the fact I was tailgating somebody makes me believe it was the metropig trying to claim a bribe.

Accepted it.. never paid it.. See a summons was issues in 2013.. lol... yet to see it.. guess they cant find me.

These days they have that numberplate reading cameras at roadblocks and when it flags a car as having outstanding fines they pull you over and hand you a notice in person. So then you have to pay it or go to court.

Good luck finding me driving that car with that plate again.

I have a fine that says "Operated a combination of vehicle, with a total GVM > 9000 kg, at a speed of 106-110 km/h which is in excess of the 80 km/h being the speed limit prescribed by the Minister".

I NEVER exceed speed limit, I cannot as though it's in my DNA or something. And I'm not sure what they mean by GVM > 9000 kg. Are they saying I was driving a truck? No image on payfine.co.za. Now before I get my license disc renewed I have to take time out to sort this, I have no experience with this but expect the worst, out or just pay? I also have drivers expiry coming up in a few months. :(

Anyway Roux I hope you don't get a schlep renewing yours too as I expect I might. I understand normal offenses and I'd just pay but time wasters are annoying :/

Those are the fines you don't lol at. You may find yourself stopped at a random roadblock and arrested/locked up when they see you never appeared in court and as a consequence a warrant of arrest was issued.

A fine handed to you by the cop is a summons and fine all in one, either pay it or appear in court or an arrest warrant is issued for contempt of court.

That may be the case in some municipalities, not all.

You have a good point, and actually I do wish I still had that car. If for no other reason than to get to pulled over at a road block and told have and outstanding fine, to which my reply will be "Oh, when was that" when they tell me 4 years ago I honestly would have loved to tell them to f.... off.

Well sadly that is no longer an option for me. I miss that car...
