What is Legal is not necessarily what is Safe!
It is important to recognize that the National Road Traffic Act only stipulates what is required in terms of the quality of windscreen used and the need to ensure visibility for the driver. It does not make it illegal to drive where the crack is not in the view of the driver and does not obstruct his vision. Even though driving with a cracked windscreen might not be a ticketable offence it should not be construed that doing so is safe as well!
We have discussed windscreen safety in detail on the website in detail in a section titled Road Safety and Your Windscreen
We would like to refer to the importance of windscreen safety and why a cracked windscreen might be a significant danger to your safety inside the vehicle:

Hi everyone,
So i got a traffic fine this morning for a cracked windshield.
the crack is on the passenger side and and does not disturb my view at all,
what does the law say about that?
thanks,
Bar1
Ha - mine is the same - and I have held off fixing it because the GFIP is causing stones to fly into my windscreen and I would hate to have it repaired and then to replace the thing a week later for another crack. Until the roadworks wind down, to me there is no point.

Claim the windscreen from SANRAL, they have to ensure that the roads are cleaned up properly before opening them to the public for use.
My brother claimed both his front spotlights from them that were damaged on the highway during the GFIP construction works and one of my colleagues has claimed for two tires that were damaged by road resurfacing works
Did they pay up?
I will take a pic later on today...
I just changed insurance company last week!
hope they wont give me any problems?
Yip, they pay for it and then claim it from the contractor that's responsible for the road section where it happened.

So your new insurance company didnt bother to get inspection letter? Hmm seems very strange.

What are you talking about. It seems you can insure a wreck, wait for an installment to go off, and claim you had an accident. :wtf: I've NEVER had anyone EVER inspect my car upon insuring it.
Seriously? I know that several insurers send you to an assessment centre before you have full cover.
