Hey All

Has anyone else received an SMS today saying they have an outstanding traffic fine?

It has a number to call and ask to quote your ID number as reference which is alredy on the SMS.

So anyway I phoned them an apparently i have a fine outstanding from last year sept. for R750
and I can find no evidence of this fine anywhere on paycity/viewfine etc.?
so am wondering if this is a scam or not.

Under the new aarto legislation they must send out fines with registered mail so I would ignore it.

Thats pretty much what I am going to do

and besides after a year there should have been a warrant of arrest out by now.

I just found out that I have 3 infringements on the AARTO site ... But they're way back from 2010. Any idea if these are still valid?

I suggest contact your local authority and just make sure. The last thing you want is to get pulled over in the middle of nowhere and getting arrested for outstanding fines. (yes, it happens)

I've been trying to get hold of them. Phones just ring and ring ... I've also sent emails to both the Metro police as well as AARTO. No response.

Isn't it true that they have to give you the change to pay first before they lock you up?

It took me a few times to get through to them. Then they transfer you and thats get dropped, then I got we have high caller volumes and will phone you back.

but eventually i got through.

Still got R750 in a fine to pay though :(

Aha, got through to them. On a Friday after 3pm of all days! I'm doing something called "making representation". The woman I spoke to said that they'll probably cancel the fines as their quite old. She also said that the enforcement letters have been put on hold until further notice so there is no arresting when pulled over nor paying fines at roadblocks.

I'm keeping copies of these representation letters in my car though.

AFAIK Aarto fines have to be via registered mail and have to be issued within 40? days or they expire

Just another way to earn a quick buck out of us!

Yeah, I received a fine from Nov 2011 today, so almost 60days has passed.

Do I need to physically go and state my case, or is it just like submit a letter etc etc?

Got a fine from some small municipality in the cape last year may, received it 42 days after the offence, emailed them and they just scrapped it. Wish JMPD could be that easy

I received a fine (NORMAL POST) for a speeding infringement for 3 weeks back, can I ignore this considering it wasnt via REGISTERED POST?

Where was the fine issued?

AARTO only applies to JMPD and TMPD currently

I also have one in Sep13 - received no notice, so won't be paying

I must be the most unluckiest guy in the world. I have a registered letter waiting for me at the post office. Checked the status of the JMPD fine. "Infringement notice waiting for collection". This all makes sense since I received a slip to collect a registered letter.:(

yip, I think you will have to collect it, as AFAIK they just have to prove that they sent a regstrd mail - just make sure it was sent within the prescribed period
