On a more serious note, if there was an arrow to the right, there'd have been a dedicated "turn-right" lane

Sadly that is not the case.

I can think of numerous example where there is an arrow on a dual straight/turn lane and it infuriates me.

In most cases the local people are aware and the lanes are wide enough so those with a brain will pull towards the side of the lane for others to pass. Easier in a left-turning one obviously.

on a bike you are within the law to share a lane with a car, problem is when the car wants to break the law and drive in the oncoming lane. They don't check to see if a bike is approaching. They just floor it to take the gap. I have been knocked down like that before.

Too true.

There is never just one turn arrow at a time. Perpendicular traffic would have a green arrow too and would turn directly into the area you want to cut across.

No they wouldn't. Oncoming traffic has a red robot. The one way off ramp joining our road has a green arrow left during our lane's green arrow to the right onto the one way on ramp. No one else is turning into or crossing the area we're wanting to cut across, i.e. there is no oncoming traffic until the green arrow is over.

Ah, on this particular intersection you are correct, it being the on and off ramps.

Indeed. Of course only (most) Capetonians would know, it's important info to include in the OP.

So would you do it? :)

No I wouldnt, but i would expect it from drivers in that area. Everytime I'm in that Kromboom, Jan Smuts, Belgravia area I'm amazed by the lack of respect for the rules of the road. Speeding in residential roads, driving through robots and stop signs, stopping where you not meant to stop, no clue of who has right of way, showing off, not knowing how to properly operate the lights, etc

It usually takes one car to do it and thereafter all the cars turning follow. Same as with this thread. As soon as the first person admits they do it, the rest will come out too.

I personally see nothing wrong with it. You're not endangering anyone and are alleviating traffic.
