Traffic shaping

I thought this wasn't legal any more, but telkom seems to be shaping out ordinary http and ftp traffic.

I just tried downloading the SUSE 10.1 mini-install disc (30 odd MB).

Tried every single mirror on the OpenSUSE page, both http and ftp - best download rate I got is around 10kbyte/s. This is on 4mbit ADSL.

So I had an idea, just a theory. Downloaded the ISO on our UK server (4Mbyte/s). then, scp it over here. Guess what? It's coming down at 114kbyte/s.....

I hate Telkom
 
Just use a download manager during the day for now. 5 threads/connections or more will bring your max line speed.

ftp sites are where most Linux ISO files are held, you only get single thread off FTP.....
I was grabbing the 2 Debian DVDS last night at full speed locally....woke up this morning and they had dropped to 20KB/sec....dissapointing.
 
I dont think this has much to do with shaping. Reason being that shaping prioritizes http and ftp. Seems like its just a slow, congested path between you and the server you trying to download from. Try what MrG suggests
 
Beta, are you using jigdo for the Debian ISOs? I find if I jigdo them from saix, I get about 70% of the image at full line speed, and the last bit from cdimage comes at whatever Telkom feels like.
 
No, but I usually get my local images at full speed from the site I get them, UCT LEG......not today though.I usually grab my International images via HTTP multithread.

hmm, okay yeah he needs to get HTTP mirror, like I am using for Fedora 6 atm. im on disc 3 and they all going nice and fast
 
razer, I used wget (single thread) on the server, then scp to copy it from the server to my notebook.
 
Beta.. if you want and are in cpt u can go to UCT, they have a freedom toaster thingy with latest stuff on it or if a non-student and have a usb hard-drive /big flash stick i can go in and get it from the labs like my other friend does sometimes :P

Cool thanks! I've been to PC Game World often but I've never noticed it. Will go check it out tomorrow.
