Hi all! Firstly, my sincere apologies if this is in the wrong place on the forum - I wasn’t entirely sure where best to post…

I am worried that I was caught earlier today doing 120km/h or just over, in an 80 zone - there were some mitigating factors, but this was on the N1 outside of Worcester. What are the latest ramifications for something like this with the new traffic infringement laws, considering a possible 40km/h + over the limit bracket? I’m very worried about what might happen to me, obviously I accept there’s no excuse, but what are likely my best and worst possible outcomes with something like this? Any advice would be appreciated.

Ignore till a summons is served on you, which will be never or shortly thereafter.

Thanks, that’s the plan for now. Just trying to prepare myself for what might need to happen - very frustrated.

I go t a no admission of guilt (NAG) letter in the mail a few years ago.

The advice I got at the time was to try and phone or go and see the magistrate and ask for a fine. I tried that, but had to go to court. Horrible experience but in the end I paid a R1000 fine and its not showing on my criminal record.

Thanks - hoping I’ll just be able to go to court (if I do get a letter) and argue my case as best I can, grovel, etc. There were some factors involved.

you wont get a fine in the post but a court appearance date .usually if they see it as around 30 kmph over the limit its court time .maybe it missed you .dont worry untill its time to worry .here by us its 30 over posted speed .26kmph over is R1760 by us .go look on payfines in the new year around feb if they subscribe to it it may be there .you may also get an sms .its then considered delivered .

That's a NAG fine, I've gotten one before, but as mentioned above, ignore until a summons is served, If a summons is served and I THINK it must be hand delivered or done through proper register mail or something of the sort then you can try talk to them but yeah it'll end up in court.
With me i waited it out, and at the time i believe it lapsed after 2 years. I never heard anything even though i got the original fine in the mail. The car was in my mothers name, i even went and got it changed into my name and still nothing.

Have to be carefull with that road outside Worcester, from CPT side. Try get the number of the person dealing with prosecuting the fines/or cases in Worcester. You might be able to write the a letter (their format).Obviously you will need the fine number. Be patient and stay on top of it, esp the date of court appearance.

R1200.

The new laws are not in effect yet and probably never will be.

And no it’s not a NAG, got one just a few weeks ago for that stupid 80km/h zone right in the middle of a three lane highway called the N1 past Paarden Eiland.

Still waiting for the summons which has allegedly been issued according to the fear mongering SMS they love to send these days.

Same. Went to court. Was herded in with a batch of people. Paid R300 for 110 in 60 zone.

Yeah I know, lesson definitely learnt! Will try find out - I guess for now I’m just going to have to wait it out until I get the summons.

I know that stretch, it’s crazy… Pretty hilarious, hopefully it just goes away.

Any other similar routes to watch out for in CPT & surrounding areas ?

Travelling to the area soon (from PE), and want to avoid being caught out like this, as far as possible.

Waze is your friend, only started using it again recently after ditching it way back when

but it will show you every permanent camera in Cape Town & surrounds and it's helped me avoid at least a couple of roadblocks and temporary speed cameras during the xmas-bonus-traffic-fine season

fwiw if you're driving all the way from PE along the N2 that stretch from Wildernes to Mosselbaai usually has filthy pigs hiding in the bushes with their cameras, parts of it is even 100km/h for absolutely no reason whatsoever

Thanks very much, including the info along the main route I have to drive, which I've not done in years.

Never used Waze before, so will download and try it out.

Does it chomp through data ?
Presume it does, so would have to get extra, or swop a SIM card around to allow for it.

I think that little 80 zone is there just for revenue generation

Mine was only a "drove a car in a bicycle lane" but R1000. I took some photos of the lane in Bree Street in Cape Town with at least 6 cars parked in the demarkated area and took it to the public prosecutor at Wynberg Court. He cancelled the fine immediately
