Traffic violation - advice needed

Thanks very much, including the info along the main route I have to drive, which I've not done in years.

Never used Waze before, so will download and try it out.

Does it chomp through data ?
Presume it does, so would have to get extra, or swop a SIM card around to allow for it.

I use it almost every day I’m on the road and it’s never been noteworthy usage of data.

And for context I have 2GB a month.

Sorry if I landed up hijacking the thread and sending it off on a different tangent, but being prepared for the trip is also about not giving authorities (added / unnecessary) reasons to fine, if stopped, which I'm expecting to happen at this time of the year (road blocks).

Cheers @SauRoNZA

I subsequently read up on Waze and Google Maps, and apparently Maps uses quite a bit more at up to 5 MB / hour ; still next to nothing ....

.... and for both, if you apparently do your route planning while on WiFi (including zooming in and out along the route, one post stated) then they use around half the usual amounts, on mobile.

Then looked at battery saving options - although my phone has a 6,000 (not a typo) mAh battery, after slightly over a year's use I think if the screen's on for 8 to 9 hours, it might not make it for a full trip.

But realistically, I think I'd only use either app for 1/2 that time at most, with screen on.

Glad to see they have voice directions available even if the screen's off, as well as traffic alerts efc.

Screen use mainly for when getting close to CPT, and exactly where I need to get to.

(plus will download offline maps as a backup & have an old Garmin, leading the way, at times).

Oh right I mostly use it with CarPlay in the car so plugged in or over AirPods when on the bike so no screen.

Just plug it into your 12v socket.

yes it does, but I don't leave it on for navigation all the time, usually I just fire it up when I'm about to leave the house to check the route I'm about to drive does not have any cops, then I shut it down again

that works well enough for 30-60min trips, it's not like our SAPS can put a new roadblock together in less time than that

for the long haul trip from PE to CPT that will take multiple hours I'd maybe just check the route every hour or so for warnings, not necessary to keep it on all the time imo

Yeah they are ****ing sneaky too.

Put it behind you out of the way where you can’t possibly see it until you’ve gone past.
try the stretch of road in table view on the west coast road between Sandown Road and Porterfield Road (70km/h zone fwiw)

pigs are there often, and even when you know they are there it is next to impossible to spot the camera which is smaller then usual, painted green, and placed in between greenery in the middle lane splitting the bus lane's opposing directions of travel

easier to spot the cop's car on the side of the road, if he's on your side the camera is facing the oncoming traffic, if he's on the other side the camera is facing you

I wish ass cancer on him every time I see it, I can only hope some long forgotten gipsy genes in my blood make it happen someday!

What are the latest ramifications for something like this with the new traffic infringement laws, considering a possible 40km/h + over the limit bracket?

If you go to jail ... hmmm, I mean, when you go to jail, will you please ask a family member or a friend to update this thread?

(The least you could do is redeem yourself somewhat by serving as a stark warning to your fellow countrymen, you know?)

Any other similar routes to watch out for in CPT & surrounding areas ?

Travelling to the area soon (from PE), and want to avoid being caught out like this, as far as possible.
M3 northbound near bishops court 60km/h. There's a long downhill which requires constant light braking. So obviously they like to prey on people who have a lapse in concentration on the downhill.

They never trap on the other side of the road to catch people who are actively driving too fast on the uphill. Such is the nature of their reprehensible profiteering, especially this time of year.

Worcester is very rough with their speed enforcements. I got one - I was doing 15km/h over the limit (work duties)

They sent me the summons etc
Hell, they even contacted GMT > EMS Fleet to find out who was driving and called me directly.

I figured that was lekker rough of them.

Now when I went visit Worcester (especially) I put on Waze and stick to the speed limit. TSEK to them. :D

Waze is your friend, only started using it again recently after ditching it way back when

but it will show you every permanent camera in Cape Town & surrounds and it's helped me avoid at least a couple of roadblocks and temporary speed cameras during the xmas-bonus-traffic-fine season

fwiw if you're driving all the way from PE along the N2 that stretch from Wildernes to Mosselbaai usually has filthy pigs hiding in the bushes with their cameras, parts of it is even 100km/h for absolutely no reason whatsoever
I drove 2500km before Christmas (JHB to EL and back), and saw just one camera, pointing the other way. Waze warned me of a few cops lurking beside the road just watching, but I'm happy with that.

Have a chat with the Wynberg Public Prosecutor
He will reduce the fine by 50%

I mean, thanks, will do.

Is this whole thread based on the OP suspecting they might have been captured by a speed camera?

Well, it's also about the broader picture: This year, many forumites and/or their loved ones and/or acquaintances could end up hearing many radio station broadcasts simultaneously echoing around them for months ... because they will be thrown in a South African jail cell.

And yet, they still they choose to speed.
Poor things.

It was <20MB/month for me doing 2x25km trips every day, would not consider that much data.

That one in the middle is often not valid since placed on top of shrubs, can argue unstable ground.
Have twice driven past there where should have probably gotten a fine, never arrived.

Cop will basically never park on the side of the road of the camera, or always set up car to be after speed trap.
You'll not find the legit speed trap in the center, will always be the sides.

I essentially drive past it daily and may have received plenty of notices that I'll never admit to online of course ... I see they even try the odd SMS telling you the "summons has been printed"

I endeavor to promptly pay upon every single summons I receive ... something which basically never happens
