Is anyone also experiencing way more traffic this year? I used to be able to leave my house (14km away from work) at 07h10 in the morning and be at my office by 07h50. Since the beginning of this year I have to leave by 06h30 and just make it on time by 08h00. Some days this week have taken me 2 hours to get to work and there were no issues on the highway or back roads?? This is just crazy!!

I live in Northwold, Randburg and travel along Malibongwe and the N1 to Rivonia..

Hate it!!

Very interesting you say this because I have noticed the same thing here in Cape Town. The traffic on the N1 is getting worse and worse, backing up way further than it used to before.

Usually when traffic is behaving differently other than a accident or roadworks, out of sync traffic lights are usually the problem.

Anyone else in other areas also been experiencing heavy traffic?

Traffic is much worse in Cape Town, I agree. Although it always seems to be the case at the beginning of the year before getting better towards midyead

Yup. Traffic is far worse than it ever was.

From around 2000 - 2002 I used to drive to The FAR side of pretoria (Zambezi drive offramp) twice a week at around 14:00 then return back to Johannesburg leaving Pretoria side at around 17:30 - 18:00, it would take me maximum 1 Hour.
Recently I went from Vodaworld in Midrand (about half the distance) back to johannesburg, and left at around 18:00. It took me almost an hour to get home, so basically. Traveling time has doubled.
At the moment, I leave home at 5:45 get to work by 6:15 (South of JHB to Central JHB) and in the afternoon I leave at 15:30 and get home by 16:00.
This is the only way to preserve my sanity.

A sudden increase in traffic occurs at the beginning of every year.
I do not know what causes it but by the end of January there is a very noticable jump in the amount of traffic.

At the end of last year I could leave home (PTA) at 6:45 and be at work (Midrand) by 7:20 making the travel time 35 mins
Now I leave at 6:20 and arrive at work at 7:20 making the travel time 60 mins
Back roads that used to have queuing traffic for 10 minutes now have delays of 20 to 30 minutes.

Last week I was starting to wonder if I must start looking for work closer to home because traveling for two hours a day with other rude idiots on the road is flipping stressful.

its all the "new" people in jhb looking for jobs, some matriculants others just deciding to give jhb a try in the new year ...
a lot of people think jhb is still the best place to get a decent job easily but alas that is no longer the case !

jobs are very hard to come by these days especially in jhb, DBN and CPT are better bets IMHO

Traffic in jhb is a nightmare and dont get me started on the attitudes of the drivers these days, every small thing and someone will hooter at you!

You live around the same area - what colour your Type R? ;)

On another note, why not take Witkoppen to and then under the highway along Rivonia? I'm in Northriding (near the Dros) and drive to Paulshof (near the Ford/Madza garage) and it takes me 40 minutes.

I'm guessing extra at the start/end of your journey wouldn't be too much more than 20 minutes - so half the time?

I live right next to you in Sonneglans.

Have to travel all the way to Parktown next to the CBD so I take Pres. Fouche all the way 'till it meets up with Malibongwe again, by that time my poor car has been running on the clutch for about 45min, only then does the long part of the trip start... 21KM of pure hell... :(

I feel your pain, and yes, traffic is INSANE this year, it's been getting worse over the past 4 years but it's like the growth is now exponential.

Companies need to seriously start looking at telecommuting and more flexible working hours such as shifts because I don't think the current traffic situation will be tenable in 10 years time.

I guess the current transport infrastructure is self regulating in that once people reach the point of not being willing to sit in traffic for X hours a day, they will start looking for work closer to home and decentralization will start to kick in.
Just how much pain and inconvenience are people willing to put up with before they look for alternative transport, alternative working hours, alternative careers, etc. ?

If I leave at 7, I get to work at 8, I leave at 8 I get to work 8:15.
I'm late every day, but its flippen worth it, till I get a warning or something...

What time do you leave in the morning? I come down blandford rd, Jim fouche, malibongwe to Sunninghill and it takes me about 20/25 minutes. We leave at six.

I have also noticed an increase in traffic this year for no apparent reason (roadworks etc).

It used to take me 4 minutes and now it takes 6 minutes :mad:

A red one :) Colour of your car? Volvo C30 correct?

Good thing sanral has upgraded all the highways right? right?

/sarcasm

I think this time of year the sun blinding people just before rivonia in the morning also causes traffic to slow down a bit.

This is where I guess it's partly my fault. I leave at 7, but should be leaving no later than 6:20 if I want to make life a lot easier (although, it's getting worse so 6 would be better these days). Problem is I struggle to go to bed early at night, I'm just not that type. Also, I need like 8 hours of sleep to prevent Zombie mode.

Other issue is that the traffic is ridiculously erratic these days. This morning I was sitting still in places I've never had issues before. No lights were out, no accidents. The mind boggles.

This is exactly what I need to do, but I am not going to be sitting at the office from 06h30 if I should only be there by 8. It is just ridiculous that you have to plan your life like this to get to the office that is 14km away!! :( And then u get these irritating fools that just drive down the yellow lanes, but the metro cops just sit there and catch people going 1km an hour over the speed limit.. My traffic is also just 10 times worse for no reason!!

Yeah and the problem is when I complain most people tell me I "just" need to get up earlier.
Now look, I get that, but most people are boring phuuckers who are married etc. and are used to going to bed early and getting up earlier etc.... in other words, they're good with routine. I'm not.

Most of my friends aren't here over weekends (GF's and the like) so I'm forced to sometimes go out during the week. Getting up earlier would mean I'd have to kill any form of social life I might have, plus, getting up earlier isn't a sustainable solution. A few years from now most people will be getting up earlier....where does it end?

Yea - blue one ...

I just recall you saying how you run with one, and I met a red Type R on Northumberland on 18 December. Thought it could be you ;)
