Would anyone recommend buying a transcend 1 TB external harddrive? I know Seagate and Western Digital are the better ones, and that Transcend's flashdrives are very good.

I see Transcend sells shock resistance hard drives....it is good?

Don't want to spend a lot of money on something that gives problems etc....or should I rather stick to Seagate/ Western Digital?

The ruggedised Transcend is very good and the USB 3 version particularly fast. It has a thick silicon enclosure between the drive and the case, plus external soft edges. Rectron sell them, but you must be a registered dealer

Transcend uses Seagate/WD/Toshiba etc. drives inside them. Transcend is the manufacturer of the enclosure only.

Shock resistant drives are marketing gimmick. If you drop it, it's gone. No amount of military shock proofing will help, I'm afraid...

This.

There are reports on the website about drop tests being done on these drives

Agreed with this, just get the cheapest best warranty hard drive you can find.

Does it have to be shock resistant? because WD has a good 1TB USB 3.0 for a little cheaper then the Transcend.

THANX FOR ALL THE HELP!!

and then the other question.....R999 for 1TB (spesifically 1 TB) is it a good price or not? must I grab it now at that price or wait until after Christmas? will the price drop more?

This guy

disagrees.

Not sure about the other brands, but I've (unintentionally) drop kicked this guy a number of times. Just over a year in and it's still as good as new.

is it a good time to buy one now? or must i just wait till after Christmas.....don't want to buy one now, and then in 2/3 weeks time the price drops really down....i don't know the trend with these prices over Christmas........

Then you haven't drop kicked it enough to cause damage. Drives have a certain shock resistance, AFAIK 2.5" drives are higher. When exceeded, the drive will break, and a rubberised enclosure will make little to no difference.

Just like yours has suffered abuse and still works, I know of non-shock proof portables that too have been abused and still work.

The key is abusing them while powered off, because they are tenfold more fragile when powered on.

Marketing gimmick for the most part.

Just be aware that 'shock resistant' simply refers to the construction of the casing and its ability to absorb the kinetic energy from falls, to resist crushing force, etc...

This is only really helpful when the drive is off. It will do little to nothing if the drive is on and subject to a severe impact.

I've got the older USB2.0 Transcend 2.5 'rugged' drive and the quality is good. Had it for quite a few years now. The rubber casing makes it much nicer to handle and transport than other plastic/metal external drives in my experience, easy to grip and no worries about scratches.

Oh yeah, I should've mentioned that the drive was not operating at the time. Of course, when it's powered and you attempt something like that it won't end well.
I have dropped it a number of times, when switched off. Concrete, wooden floors, asphalt, tiles, carpets. It may not be indestructible, but anything else that would've gone through what I put this thing through, would've been dead a long time ago...is what I'm getting at. :)
