Transcend external harddrives

I own a Transcend storejet 25A3 1TB. Everything is good about the hard drive except one. It uses an extra usb port for power supply. Its a big issue for me as I have to hunt for extra USB port in my laptop to start using the drive. I am planning to sell it just because of this problem.

WD or seagate (or any other brand) doesn't have this problem as they use only one USB port (use just like flash drive).

Transcend doesn't manufacture their own hard drives - they purchase from either WD, Seagate or Toshiba. Your model must have a drive that needs more than 500mA. Have you tried to connect it using a single cable to a USB 3.0 port as these should be able to supply more current. Some laptops have USB 2.0 ports that can supply more than 500mA which might also be suitable.

I tried on couple of laptops (usb 2.0). It never worked with the single cable. All other drives from WD and seagate were working seamless on the same laptops with just one cable.

Is there a way to see how much power the USB is supplying to the drive?

Were the WD and Seagate drives also 1TB? The smaller drives use less power. According to this review the 25A3 has a Toshiba MQ01ABD100 drive (Japanese) inside which are usually more power efficient than Seagate and WD. According to the review it can be used off a single port. When you look at the devices in the USB shutdown menu is there any indication about the type of drive?

Maybe you can try to load this utility to see what drive is inside your 25A3. Try looking at the S.M.A.R.T. data for more information.

Hi Yotch, you are right. One of my laptop has 4 USBs. Connecting to one of the usb identified the hard drive without using any extra USB (checked just now). Rest 3 need extra USB to identify the drive.

Is the plastic flange inside that port blue in colour? If so that is a USB 3.0 port. The others are presumably black in colour.

The drive will transfer data much faster using the USB 3.0 port so you should rather use that if it is available.

I have a Transcend 1TB on the PC...
No issues. Almost a year old and it runs 24/7/365

Is that a 2.5" portable drive? Is it connected to a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port?

I have two 500GB Transcend drives. USB 2. They're 1.5-2 years old. No issues. I only use them occasionally though.

To be honest I have not ever had a problem with 2.5 inch USB drives.
