Is there some way I can do this without going through Gmail? I don't want to transfer my phone contacts to gmail.

And oh, I am totally new to 'droid having just received my Acer Gallant Duo from Orange this morning. Is there a recommended list of apps that are a must-install to enhance my experience with 'droid? I don't facebook, and will install twitter.

Not an Android user here, but Android must be able to import contacts from a vcf file, surely? Just export your contacts from iCloud to a vcf and then import to Android?

In the meantime I found an app called bump that can apparently do it and allows you to tick specific contacts to transfer. I must just charge android phone and see how that works.

There is an app in the Appstore on Apple, called Contacts to Excel (Free) which allows you to export all contacts into Excel an excel file, which can then be imported via a PC / Mac and then subsquently transfered to an Android device

You ordered that Acer phone from Orange right? did you get hit by customs?

Out of interest, why would you not want to go through Gmail?

Yes I bought from Orange. And nope, no customs fees all paid by Orange and part of the purchase price, I even got a call from DHL to confirm that there is no invoice coming my way:). The only issue I had was that it took an extra 3 days for the stock to arrive (at Orange), but once they shipped the phone from the UK it was with me within 3 days as promised.

Now that I've done some setup, I might in fact go through Gmail, I just wasn't too keen sharing all my contacts with Gmail.

Fantastic way of backing your contacts up to the cloud. When you change to another android phone you just sign in and sync...

If you are paranoid about your gmail getting hacked perhaps setup 2-Step Authentication. There is a app in the play store for that as well.

Must say coming from iPhone, Android is a bit of a change. Simple things like pull down to refresh, tap the top to go to top of page, or having the alphabetical list of contacts along the scroll bar to quickly jump to certain letters, I am really going to miss:). My phone is on 4.0.3 btw.

I imagine those are patented by the Apple company and unlikely to ever appear at Android?

I know that the official Twitter client has pull down to refresh, but you are used to have it in the browser? Perhaps look at some of the other browsers like Chrome, Dolphin and Opera (not sure it they have other shortcuts).

or having the alphabetical list of contacts along the scroll bar to quickly jump to certain letters

My Samsung has this if I understand you correctly (alphabet listed on the right hand side, tap on a letter to go to that part of the contact list).

Cool that twitter has that feature then. Tapatalk doesn't.

Yes, that's what I'm referring, to the Acer E350 doesn't have this for its contact list

I'm sure there should be such an option, play around with the settings a bit, otherwise, look for a third party app that can do it. Android is freedom!

I was just going to say, I think you should just use Gmail. It's much easier, and it means that your contact list is backed up to the cloud and will be automatically synced every time you get a new phone.

As for good Android apps, I made a long list on a different forum. See here: http://www.evilsod.com/forums/showthread.php?4598-The-revised-Android-apps-thread
