As the title says; how long did it take most of you to get used to an automatic gearshift from the manual one?

Having driven manual for quite some time, my new toy (Golf 7 GTI:D) is a DSG, so i'm just trying to find out how quick it is to adapt to that.

5 minutes.

You only hit the brake instead of the clutch ONCE, then you learn.

Well, I've never needed a transition period as my gramps had an automatic Corolla due to a bad left knee. I frequently assisted him which meant driving his car, while all our own vehicles were manual. My previous Civic was manual while my Rexton is auto. Not really something I've ever thought about, to be honest.

No, it will take you a year to completely get over it.
When i switched, my left leg kept reaching for the clutch pedal.
Remember its muscle memory.
But dont worry, its not dangerous as your left leg is just pressing on air.

It was within 2 minutes...had to learn for the test drive. Once I used the paddles, the transition was easy...especially considering I have the same layout on my steering wheel for the playstation :D

Why are you braking with your left leg, this is not F1 racing.

speak for yourself :D

No seriously, as you come to a halt and you habitually push in what would be the clutch with your left foot, you hit the brake by mistake and break your collarbone on the seatbelt.

I have driven for 16 years.
1st 4 - Manual
Next 10 - Manual and Auto
Last 2 - Auto
And will never go back to manual (Too old for that).
I have never pressed the Brake with my left leg. I know professional racers who start small with the go-karts use the left leg for brake and right for accelerating.

Anyway to answer the OP, the biggest and most scariest moment i recall when switching to Auto is the bends.
At a Traffic light, i took a bend that was almost 180 degrees and i swear the car was still on fifth gear.

I drove manuals for +/-25 years and switched to automatic five years back. It took me less than a week (2 days if I remember correctly) to get used to it.

Does not really take long.. first bit you sometimes want to reach for the gear lever, but then realise soon enough.

I switched from manual to auto about 3 years ago.. won't go back if I can help it.

Buying a manual car is like buying a TV without a remote
