That's what I was expecting too but actually found London to be more expensive.

But then again the CHF was around R11 at the time with the £ at around R18.

Indeed. This thread has backfired somewhat in that the list of possibilities has grown instead of narrowing it down. Not a bad problem to have I guess.

Will probably get to Switzerland a bit later in the year / next to visit family anyway, so would rather do something else though. Duly noted on the Swiss Riviera though. Would summer or winter be best for that?

Too far. I'm flying out of London...so most of these places are <2k ZAR flights (Still stunned by that). Thailand is 6k. Would prefer to keep the entire thing somewhere round the 8k mark all in...

Yeah that place does sound like a hot spot culture wise.

Trick with Venice is to go off the beaten track for dining and drinking, sure Rome has so much too see, depends what you want out of the experience, I really enjoyed Montepulciano and Tuscany. Would go back tomorrow

How feasible is Tuscany on foot? Ideally I want something with a fairly high concentration of historic stuff within walking/taxi distance.

I went towards the end of winter and beginning of spring but only because I wanted to yodel on snow-capped mountains.

From what you describe, Rome would be ideal. The only downside is the relatively unfriendly people, but you're not going there to make friends.

Correct, I have lived in Italy. Don't go in mid summer either as its hot and crowded.

Switzerland was amazeballs. Saw the whole country by train in 3 days cause I was lost.

Spain is awesome, France can be a lot of fun and believe it or not but some great partying in Istanbul

haha...yeah...nearly fell off my chair when I saw tickets to Germany are <400 ZAR.

As for ass end of the world...thats actually going to be where most of my travel money this year will be going...3 week trip back to biltong country.

You should really scrap Madrid from that list. Was there a few months back and it's really not that great. Barcelona is a much better option and then you would be close to the French border and can perhaps head to Italy (Venice and then Rome).
