In 2012 I had to work during the holidays only being off on the 25th and 26th. I was just going to stay home and take it easy, but at about 14:00 on the 25th, I was bored and decided to get in the car and go for a drive.
I had no place in particular I was going, just wanted to get out of the house. So I drove...
This is more or less the route I ended up going.
At times I didn't have reception and not knowing how far the next fuel station is, I considered turning back, but was enamored with the solitude, so I forged ahead.
"At last, a town, I should be able to get fuel here" I thought to myself. But it being a small town on Xmas day, everything was shut tighter than a tick's arsehole. Next town can't be too far away, I hoped.
Late in the afternoon I saw a sign for Oudtshoorn and knowing my friends are unlikely to be the family Christmas type, I dropped a message asking if I can pop in.
"Of course, but we're in Oudtshoorn" came the reply. "Good, so am I, see you in 5." I responded.
So I joined them for a joint but kindly declined the drinks, the road lay ahead.
I thanked them for the hospitality and said my farewells. Time for snacks. As it is Oudtshoorn, not much is open at 00:00. But I know Mossel Bay has 24h fast food places. Let's go.
I picked up a McDonalds meal and decided I needed to rest for a bit before continuing. I stopped in a parking lot close by and nabbed a quick 2hours of sleep.
Off we go again.
This time I was on a road I know very well, so was less concerned with what lay ahead and by now I had scratched my itch to get out of the house. Time to get back home.
Just as the sun peaked over the horizon I came down the pass towards Somerset West.
Slightly tired, but with my soul refreshed I arrived back in Cape Town.
