Hello Good People,

I need some advice please. Is there anyone here that’s been to Europe recently? We are planning a Euro trip in August and plan to travel by train once in Europe. Do you guys have any idea what the train costs are like from one country to the next. We landing in Italy, then we wanna go to Germany, France and Spain by train. Any advice or tips will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Flights will be cheaper than trains usually, unless you want to take in the scenes? The only trains i've used that were cheaper than flights at the time were Thalys

You could also buy a RailPass depending on your trip.

We not worried about the scenery we just assumed traveling by train would be cheaper than flying.

We are also considering the RailPass, seems like a good option.

I travel in Europe quite often, however I normally drive or fly

Rail is much more expensive than air travel, however way more convenient especially when traveling shorter distances. When I was in Austria in 2010 - 2011 over the December holidays it cost us €60 pp one way to travel from St Johann to Innsbruck by train :wtf:

What are you planning on doing here exactly? I would usually recommend hiring a car as then you can explore all the lesser travelled placeand see a alot more without restrictions, but it might not accomodate your needs.

I highly recommend giving Bruges in Belgium a visit.

Just came back from there yesterday and it's a magnificent place, just beautiful and has some amazing beer.

We just going to visit the main cities and capitals.

How much does it cost to hire a car?

Thanks!

I paid +-R1000 per way for two tickets on 2nd class on Deutsche Bahn in December '12. Best bet if you are going to travel by train, reserve your seats!!! They oversell those train tickets and quite a few people sit in the aisle.

EDIT: This was from Munich to Saalbach (Austria).
