Travelstart

Any idea hows the weather in Thailand at the end of July? Is it really rainy? Like, can't do boat trips and stuff? No beach swimming?

Also considered booking via Travelstart until I decided to look at the latest reviews. They are half the price when compared to booking directly with an airline. It seems like Vitality uses them too as the prices are quite similar, I haven't confirmed this. Also found a few customer complaints for int. flights booked with Vitality.

I found a few good deals on SkyScanner when booking directly via them (I only see this option on the app and not the website), about 2-4k more than TS, but still reasonable. Is SkyScanner any better?

Don't want to have to deal with cancelled flights or other s%*t when on holiday.

So it’s not as bad as I thought it would be.

Today was the first “rainy” day we experienced with more that 8 hours of rain scattered through the day.

But every other day was 2 hours rain at most and it dried within an hour. Spent 5 hours in the ocean yesterday ( and got sunburned ), it was fantastic.

Boats are running every other day, people still doing water sport etc no problem.

It depends on your luck (July might be a bit more but not too different) but if you at the beach for a few days you should be fine. If you are travelling with a companion even better to take advantage of rainy days because the best hotels are steeply discounted if you look around.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies man. Appreciate it.

Trip booked for August. Will be my second time overseas and second time to Thailand. SO's first trip overseas ever. We're both really hyped.

Wheres that travel tips thread your promised us? :p

We're doing a lot of business travel. Mostly regional. Zim, Swaziland, Mozambique etc. I found that Travelstart is great for quick research on available flights, but I we never book with them though for the reasons others have given. Contrary to what others have said above, we use Flight Centre and find that we get much discounted prices. Cape Town to Vic Falls was quoted at R41k/person return on Travelstart and we got it for R15k/person. Go figure.

Client booked us into the Kingdom. Bit of a schlep having to travel from VF to Hwange in the morning and back in the afternoon, but just two days. Kingdom was nice enough, but food is seriously overpriced for what you get. Sun City Vibes. Belonged to Sun at some point. The craft brewer up the road has decent food at a better price.

To be frank, I prefer Livingstone for any extended stay. Nice little guest house there at very good rates. Think it was Olga's.

Any update on the Travel Thread, or should we start our own? I was considering using Travelstart but ended up calling FlightCentre instead. I just emailed them with our plans for me and my SO to travel to Turkey in September. Let's see what they come back with. We will need domestic flights and car hire for our trip, and we’re probably going to book Airbnbs for our road trip.

The main reason to use Travelstart and other travel agency sites is their overrides and floor deals (and corp deals) with airlines which often get them in cheaper than other websites using general stock availability. And sometimes cheaper than the airline's own website. Obviously that is subject to the fare basis having availability in the linked classes. They won't just let 3rd-parties sell as much as they want.

Despite it not being my career, I dabbled in owning a travel agency for a number of years as I love travel. Its cut-throat of note but yeah there are ways to get it cheaper with them. I'm currently just idling with an online agency i have that is not selling much till I decide what to do with the business as my life now is far far too busy to run more than one company.

Just make sure to stick to reputable ones, there's a lot of horror stories out there too. Generally anyone ASATA registered is safe, but even then also demand paper trails and things. Not just "pay us first and we'll send you a ticket later". I

Before you decide to use them just attempt to make a call to them.

I waited over an hour to ask a simple question.

No thanks not worth saving a few k over that.,

Investec offers awesome travel deals if you bank with them used them for my last 3 years bookings

Is it ever cheaper to book via these local companies like Travelstart, Flightcentre etc? I normally book directly myself from Google flights but may look into them if I can save more next time.

It depends. You have to search for the flights and compare prices. Sometimes it is cheaper, other times it is not.

I had a travel agency quote me R52k for flights. Bought them myself directly with the airline for R40k.
