I will be going the cmd --> diskpart way. Seems easier and quicker. And that way I don't need to install more unnecessary sofwtare.

Which particular problem of mine were you referring to. One of the Linux ones?

I believe the reason that Gparted didn't work was because it needs the ntfs-3g and ntfs-config packages installed in order to resize ntfs partitions.

Using diskpart did not work.

this is what I did.
run diskpart in command prompt... good
sel disk 0.... good
sel par 2(Vista partition 250gb).... good
shrink querymax..... good
shrink desired=30000.... good
(partition 2 shrink by 29GB was successful)
sel disk 0... good
sel par 3(win 7 partition)..... good
extend..... bad

I then keep getting this message:
not enough free space to extend partition.

Yet I can see the free space when I list the disks and I can also extend partition 2 back to 250GB again.

Any advice or different method to use? Werner?

ah... i see now what is happening...i reckon if you look in disk administrator your win7 partition is the last partition,am i right? and probably at the end of the drive. so you cant extend it..it is already at the end. it needs moving backwards, which diskpart cant do i;m afraid.

why not just create a new partition in the free 30gb and use that for win7 storage space or as a shared partition to dump stuff into?

another useful thing to do it to mount it in a empty ntfs folder..
i.e. on win7 make a folder c:\dump

then create your 30gb partition, go to disk management mmc, right click the partition, change drive letter and paths, click add, then select "mount in an empty ntfs folder and select your newly created c:\dump folder...then dump stuff in there.

You had an issue a while back where you had "replaced" your previous operating system with another, but the space was still allocated (but not bootable though your boot manager). You wanted to get rid of it and I suggested GPartEd. But I forgot to follow up

Hey guys. Hopefully someone can give me some advice.

I'm trying to partition my hard drive. It's already got data on it and I downloaded GParted, as it came up in search results as an effective and easy tool to partition a drive.

It's basically an application that you write onto a CD which then makes the disc bootable with the program. Unforunately for me it doesn't work. Don't know if it's me that's being stupid. I select the sizes of the desired partition and then upon trying to apply it it crashes with a simple error message saying "could not complete actions" or some such.

Is there an easier way to partition a drive? Could it be that my drive can't be partitioned due to it being used for too long. I'm not that clued up on storage devices. I'm running XP at the moment.

try defragmenting before using gparted. On Thursday I resized 2 ntfs partitions using so it does work.

I remember some years back when I had Acronis and it balked on a drice that was heavily fragmented.

Install those packages for Gparted... I had the same problem with it not resizing ntfs partitions without them, last week.
