So, the wife bought me a little gadget last week. A TNT plunger that is used to shut down a PC. It comes with a CD that has the installation software on it. That CD isn't finalised either, I should mention...

So my first thought is "Self, this is going to have some sort of virus on it".

Anyway, so I put the disk in my PC, and as the installation starts, I get a warning from AVG that says this:

trojan.jpg

AVG has detected and blocked trojan horse PSW.Generic10.LWF as part of the install exe.

I tell my wife to return the gadget, as I don't want to install this on my PC. Someone from the online store support says I should just ignore the warning, and continue with installation. I reply to the mail, stating that generally speaking, trojans are malicious software. The store rep replies, stating that as per the mail before, I should just continue with installation.

Quote from actual mail said:
As per my email to you yesterday, the virus warning is a false positive as that is how it works. AVG Internet Security would have picked up that you inserted a CD into your computer and due to it not being known it would give you the message below as per your screenshot. There is no malicious software on the disc.

Kindly proceed to install the disc and when the AVG Internet Security pop up appears, click to continue the installation.

Now, I'm not that big into security... so I leave all that to AVG (not free edition... I actually paid for the full suite). If AVG says no, I say no.

Am I overreacting? Should I just ignore AVG and install the software? Should online store rep accept that I don't want their little gadget, and they should refund the purchase?

Likely false positive,I'd imagine their heuristic analysis flagged something that is used to shut down the PC through non-standard means as malicious

"Generic" trojan warnings are like empty toiletrolls, plenty and useless
