Trying to build a CAD computer - HELP

Those low end quadro cards are rubbish. If your on a budget, a decent gaming card will always come out top dog. But what ever keeper, keep offering your advice that a 2gb 640cuda core card is the best option. Ill be running rings around you with my 4gb 2048 cuda core card, building scenes you can only dream of.

Kinda pointless without the op contributing.

LOL you guys offer some terrible advice. I have a quadro K4000, and its useless for 3D. For the same price I would get better viewport performance if it was a regular geforce. Quadro only make sense when doing high end simulation work or something that can take advantage of the specialty options they offer. For general 3D (i.e. cad), gaming cards offer way better value. Here speak to these professionals, not the random hardware guys here who know nothing about 3D.

R8k for a quadro K2200? Fking rip off. It only has 640 cuda cores and 128bit ram bus, not to mention the old kepler architecture. That will net you pretty rubbish performance at a pretty high price. For what?

I use a Elitebook 8770W at work which has a Quadro K3000M; for 3D Cad design of large press tools and Vehicle assemblies.

You reckon it can't handle 3D Cad Design?
Ok then.

I think there's confusion here as to what is a CAD computer and what is a design computer.
The Op asked for a CAD computer and you people suggest a 3D design setup.

Clearly you're not even discussing the correct topic here.

Hi guys,

As the title suggests I would love some suggestions for a computer that can run CAD applications smoothly, Specifically Solidworks.

I want to avoid spending $$$$ tons on prebuilt dedicated workstation.

Any suggestions on processors, Graphics cards, Motherboards etc would be greatly appreciated. I also have no idea what fits with what.

Thanks

For our cam machines I use similar to the following and always works out well.

SSD (makes a huge difference).
As much RAM as I can stick in there (16 to 32GB usually).
i7
Nvidia GPU (I generally go for mid to higher range gaming cards as the workstation cards are so expensive, I also find that more ram on the gpu can help plenty).

Make sure the machine has plenty cooling, a UPS and if files are saved on a network make sure everything in between your server and workstation has a UPS as well.

Not at all what I said. Im trying to understand your justification (or anyone really) that buying a R10k entry level quadro is worth it. If you going quadro, go all out, and make you sure you can ACTUALLY use the features it has to offer. Most likely you wont. But those sh.i.te entry level models are just a waste of money.

So you don't know enough about the topic to do it your self? guess you should just keep quite then :)

RAM & Graphics - get plenty off it. and get the best kind of matched ram eg. Kingston - for Graphics go Nvidia

I run CADCAM software like PowerMill 5axis 2015 / solid modeling software Solidworks 2015 and you can never have enough power / RAM / graphics

as mentioned by a previous poster an SSD upgrade did not really help with regards to speed or perhaps the software does not take full advantage of the SSD yet?

So I must draw with pencil all day long then?

Mate, those cores won't matter... because the gaming cards are artificially crippled. this is what you don't understand.
...and without the proper drivers made for these things, your setup is going to come second.

The people using pro cards for CAD do it for a reason, not for the fun of it.

We all know the workstation card specs look crap on paper, you haven't discovered some revelation that we're all somehow oblivious to.

Can you please stop misconstruing what I say? Thanks.

How about not being condescending to everyone then?
Maybe consider everything you say is not right?

Maybe suggest a CAD machine instead of a design machine.

What the blue blazes is the difference in a Computer Aided Design machine, and a design machine (which is a computer)

I don't know, but I do 3D. And for me, a gaming card has always worked a treat. Has always been super stable, and can run massive projects just fine. Not sure why some people enjoy wasting their cash, but hey, Its their money.

+1000000000

It's all about the RAM you can attain.

OP still hasnt given a budget

And whether he wants to play games :D
I think we scared him away.

Or maybe he though that a thread where people argue about what CAD is, is not the best place to ask for advice.

I think it was a troll thread just to make us fight about Quadro vs. GeForce.

Interesting nevertheless.
I`m busy building a gaming pc at home, will be interesting to compare it to my workstation at the office.
