Trying to find a reasonable graphic tablet

Hi

I'm looking for a cheapish graphic tablet - those dinguses you can sketch on with a pen and the image is transferred into the PC. Dion wired salesmen dunno what I'm talking about,:erm: Incredible Connection also dunno, :confused: but they will order me one from the Apple factory in Bulgeria (they are soo confused...) Matrix also dunno, :o had to first carefully explain what it was... PCZone have them in stock, :) but the make is Kanvas which I've never heard of - are these OK? Are there any other shops I can try?
Note: I don't really want to spend over a grand for the thing.

Decent tablets cost money. It all comes down to what you want to use it for. Wacom make some of the best tablets around.
 
That's right, I saw some Wacom tablets before that go up to R27,000 - but this is just for home use, so it doesn't have to be indestructable. I would just like to be sure that I don't buy something with known issues or junk software, if you know what I mean...
 
Go to www.digitalplanet.co.za (Whoops, looks like their website is down. Keep checking or try to look them up in the phone book) ; they have some Wacom tablets. I wouldn't recommend any other brand as the pens are nasty (Genius), or the tablet itself is unresponsive or of an inferior quality.

The price is deeply routed in features and size. So, if you go for a small A5 tablet, it will be cheaper than an A3 one ;)

But, I wouldn't recommend going any less than say R1500 or so, otherwise you enter the "throwaway" market segment

They are the importers for the Wacom devices. You can get an A6 Bamboo Pen only for R662 EXCLUDING VAT

I had an AceCad graphics tablet for two years (Cheap, something like R400) You also get genius tablets (Try Take2). Started a new job and got introduced to Wacom tablets. No comparison. Rather save up a bit and get yourself a wacom. Bamboo should be fine for a start. A6 is tiny though.

What exactly is the difference, the things that are better in the Wacom? Just curious...

It's been a long time since I actually had a look at the specs but the big difference was in the precision of the Wacom tablets. I think at the time I bought my Intous 2 the closest thing to it that I could get was an A5 genius or something like that. It had 256 levels of pressure and the resolution across the tablet surface was something like a 1/4 of the Wacom. My Intous 2 has 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity and the resolution across the tablet is awesome. It even has tilt awareness on the pen. Now my tablet is a good few years old. They are now on the Intous 4 which has 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity.

Had a quick look at the Genius website and here is the difference in the 9x12" compared to the Wacom Intous 4 of similar size.
Wacom | Genius
Pressure Sensitivity Levels : 2048 | 1024
Resolution : 5080 lpi (lines per inch) | 2000
Report Rate : 197rps | 125rps (This is kind of like frames per second for video, the higher the smoother the motion)
Buttons/Controls on the Tablet : 8 Express Keys and a 4-function touch ring | None

What's kind of funny is the Genius seems to be the Intous 2 I have!! Being resold now since it's old tech. The pen holder, pen and tablet look identical to my Wacom Intous 2 :D
 
I had a client that also wanted a cheap tablet. This was just over a year ago...

Sold them a Genius eventually. It's still working & they say it works well for what they need it for.
 
wacom, but you will have to find someone who sells them at reasonable price. last import i did was via wantitall for around 2K. it's now about 4 or 5 years old and still going without any issues.

OK, thanks. That makes it a lot clearer. I must admit that I don't like Genius software but that may be a personality thing.. :p
