So I am having a conversation with someone and they like to stream music through YouTube, now their connection is 1MB and it buffers a lot so I told them rather pause it, wait til it's completely buffered (grey bar is full to the end) and then play. After this I show them Spotify seeing as though all they really want to do is listen, and the video's on YouTube are adding to the bandwidth load.

The next topic comes up and he says when he turns the volume higher it buffers more; so I say it's nothing but a coincidence... Then he starts saying how it's got to do with energy, that the volume going higher is requires more energy and then causes it to skip, and he is completely and utterly convinced that him raising the volume is causing the music to stutter (buffer).

I am at a loss for words.

What would you say to someone who thinks that this is the answer and gives you a patronising "lets agree to disagree, but i'm still right and you're talking ****" attitude when you tell them what they're saying is completely wrong?

introduce him to video download helper or similar

Haha, Thanks for sharing. :D
Show him this thread maybe he will then believe you.

I agree with your friend .. of course higher volume means 'more' of the signal needs to be transferred, hence the extra buffering.

You can confirm this with porn, the ladies with the biggest boobs takes longer to download. Try it & see for yourself. :D

Had a n00b IT worker at office once. Showed me proudly that he discovered internet radio, and believed it does not use any bandwidth.

Unplugged his PC from the network. He wasn't happy.

Hehehehe :D

Tell him to turn the volume down when each song starts so it buffers faster then turn it up when the buffering is done.

NICE...thanks ........I'll be sleeping on the couch tonight.....

P.S. TAKE NOTE: Your wife may not believe you watching ample unclothed women @ 10 in the morning is because you are conducting a bandwidth experiment ....

Why have you not trolled this guy yet?
If any of my friends want to argue such clearly stupid shart then I just go with it and proceed to mislead them even further.

I'm afraid to admit it is a family member - I don't have the energy to take it further, besides showing him the responses to this post; though I'm sure he'll think all of you don't know what you're talking about either and he's still right.

Agreed - you need to troll and shame him. :D

I troll my sister regularly, I don't see the issue.
If she wants to be dumb I'll just add to the dumbness.
Just the other day she told me that her fortune teller told her I would be getting a new job just as I got a new job.
I ripped the fortune teller to pieces, my sister was rather upset because you know, fortune tellers are real n stuff.
And then she goes to church on Sunday and preaches to me on Monday.

I thought youtube stopped the ability to do that last year?

One of them is born every minute. I call them brain donors.

I abused the work Internet to the tune of about 10gb in a month :D
I told the bosses it was by mistake as I didn't quite understand how internet worked exactly.

Ah - I see now it does pre-buffer but only until a certain point, then when you play again it continues; so it still does help to pause a while, it just wont buffer in totality.
