Tshwane and Generator size regulation

Except you’re ok to screw over your neighbours with a noisy generator at all hours? They wouldn’t have complained had it not been a nuisance. Not to mention the constant exhaust fumes. Why the need? A 10kW generator costs as much as a small inverter and battery.
Good luck silencing it. Easy to deal with the high frequencies but the bass will be very difficult to sound proof.

I have not been running my generator all hours of the day, It has only been running during the day when needed. Normally between 8am and 4pm on days I am working from home. I only run it between 7pm and 10pm at night.

A small inverter battery setup will not help when the cables are stolen and you are stuck without power for days on end, because the municipality don't have the funds or are unable to source replacement cables. We have had this happen a couple of times in my area this year.
 
i see Ryobi only give a KW max and KW average now ,no KVA edit not allways .anymore ,so im not sure now ,ill look on my pc .
Maybe that means its 1:1? There's no excuse for it not to be these days imho.

Did you watch my video? I'm sure the logic applies regardless of size?
 
I am also still looking for a piece of flexible exhaust pipe, as currently the extended exhaust is carrying the generator vibrations to the shed wall.
The pipe I am looking for is something like this on ebay: Flexible Polylock Stainless Steel
But I am having trouble sourcing it locally.


Why not modify and use one of these in the meantime? ;)

Have a 9kw sticker printed, slap it on the tank and call the inspector and tell him you downgraded.
Guaranteed to work because I will put money on the rep being a quota candidate that didn't earn their job the proper way and the original master rep has long been gotten rid of because of his skin colour.

“At all hours…” doesn’t mean all the time. It means when you choose to, regardless if your neighbours want to rest or not be disturbed. If a noise is a nuisance then it’s selfish to expect them to put up with it. Make another plan.

As with everything, size matters. It would be very difficult to acoustically decouple a unit of that size and the lower frequencies would need significant absorption to reduce it. If I was in this guy’s position I’d use at least 150mm thick rockwool bats surrounding it for starters, with overheating being a real issue.

The thing I took away from it was to not use perpendicular angles but rather offset angles so the waves sort of cancel out.

Is this a Pretoria thing or a DA thing? Never in my life have I heard of someone like that in the British colony of Durban.

It's where people live, do the considerate thing and move your office to an industrial area.
 
I would ask them to provide the noise level readings done by a certified official at the fence. If this reading is greater than 7dB over ambient, then I will concede and do something about it. I would then at the same time complain about his vehicle, dog(s), and TV. A dog outputs 90dB, human conversation is 60dB. The generally accepted level for human noise comfort is 55db by day and 45dB at night.

No, that’s not how sound works, especially at lower frequencies. Parallel reflective surfaces will create standing waves and the reason to un-parallel surfaces is to reduce that. Low frequencies are powerful and can only be absorbed. Keep in mind too that to perceive a sound one needs a full cycle of it (wave length) for which a 20Hz wave only full cycles at 17 meters. Meaning that you might not hear/feel it standing close to the unit, but it likely is fully forming in your neighbour’s lounge, and especially in the corners of their rooms. Bass is your enemy here. Your best bet would be to build a soundproof box around the generator with walls lined with 80kg/sq rockwool sheets at least 100mm thick. Decouple the generator by casting a slab on top of isomer pucks. You’d need ported venting baffles to reduce leak from air in/outlets. Heat will become an issue.
