Before the Geneva auto show, Audi euphemistically said the TT RS would need ‘nowhere near five seconds’ for a 0-100km/h sprint.

We can now confirm Ingolstadt claims the Coupe (1 450kg) drops the 0-100km/h benchmark in 4.6 seconds dead - 0.2 seconds quicker than BMW's official M3 figures. Porsche's 911 Carrera is not even invited to the TT RS party, sporting 0-100km/h credibility of only 4.9 seconds in manual form.

It gets even better.

TT RS top speed is limited in-line with German manufacturing standards to 250km/h. Audi will offer a factory derestricted option though, which opens up the option of chasing a claimed 280km/h at the long end of drivetrain’s endurance – naughty, naughty Audi.

Old-school configuration, new-school performance

With the 2.5l, traditionally configured, in-line five-cylinder turbo producing 100kW/litre, these performance numbers aren’t really surprising.

Peak engine outputs are a neatly rounded 250kW and 450Nm, with the turbo boosting at 1.2bar, and the common-rail, direct injected engine running at an oddly high 10.0:1 compression ratio.

That compression ratio is very high for a turbo charged engine!
I wonder how they manage to prevent pre-detonation at 1.2 bar boost and a compression ratio of 10:1? Will definitely need high octane fuel for starters.
 
maybe the turbo is electronically managed, that if you dont need the 1.2 bar, you wont get it thus saving the engine. but indeed, 1.2 bar is a hefty lot. and yes, why cant they do that with the gti, or the new scirocco.

Something tells me they have stolen the 2.5T (T5) from Volvo.. Ford did it because there to incompetent to make there own.. but i could be wrong, anyways those power out-puts are great and if you comparing a M3 i wouldn't be surprised if it did beat it, i mean a chipped 335i and almost take a m3
 
bmw had to decrease the power of the 335i so that it wont take on an M3 otherwise it would. Those 6 cyllinders of bmw are just world class leaders. I dont think they used the volvo T5 engine but if they did, it wouldnt surprise me too! the T5 engine is a brilliant engine. I wonder when BMW will start making V8 or V10 turbocharged engines, can anyone imagin, an M5 or M6 with a twin turbo ??? :eek:

Not really. The TT uses FSI technology (direct injection). When the fuel is injected it extracts some of the heat from the cylinder, reducing the chances of detonation. IIRC the Golf 5 GTI has an even higher compression ratio (10.5:1), but runs 0.5 bar boost.

Not really the M division's philosophy to build large displacement or turbocharged engines - although with the 335's success there were rumours that the next gen M3 will combine a high revving egine with turbo's

there is the new X5 M and X6 M soon to be launched ... and they booting turbo motors, so ///M philosophy to just build high revving NA motors has now changed

I'm seriously considering trading in my cars on the TT RS... seriously stunning car.

Anyone care to guess a price? I'm thinking around R750k-R800k with options.

I would love to see this. What do you define as quicker anyway? Around a track? A drag race? Over what distance exactly? or just 0 to 100kmh?

The other day I raced against a C 63 AMG, with a Z4 M coupe and was faster from 0 - 100kmh, but saw my @ss beyond that.

So yes I was quicker...but only for a few seconds :p
 
well - generally on public roads, you're not going to go faster than a certain speed, so 0-300 times are going to be useless :P

0-200 times might be the limit.

Its more than that...
The 335 is not in the M division is it?

The 335 engine won awards because of how BM made the engine, its not twin turbo, its bi turbo, each feeding 3 cylinders...

I also doubt VW stole a Volvo engine.
I think it has a lot to do with FSI, it seems this technology has yet to be maximised. They got awesome results in the RS4 without the turbo and just the FSI... and some other bits. Now this!

You do know that Audi had a 5 cylinder 2.5l engine in the old RS1 and RS2 in the early eighties ?

if you research the 3.0 Twin Turbo motor in the 335i, BMW punted it as being like a V8 without the gas guzzling, thats what they wanted they never expected the results they got, up here a 335i can whip an M3's ass (a manual M3 that is :))... the 335i is from BMW NOT from ///M ... they are two different organisations in the BMW group ...

in the end it made BMW rethink its ///M philosophy of high revving NA motors that are well suited to a race track and race character (like a GT3 Porsche) where conventional turbo cars have a disadvantage due to turbo lag on a track ... the 335i when tested was quicker than the outgoing M3 on the track which is very impressive, but thats thanks to its almost 0 turbo lag ...

the next M3 and M5 will def be turbo's but sporting a similar setup to that in the 335i ... well like i have said the new X5 ///M and X6 ///M will be 550HP twin turbo machines!
