Pretoria - A female student at the University of Pretoria was wounded in a shooting incident on the Hatfiel campus on Wednesday.

TUKS FM, the university's radio station, posted on Twitter that it had happened during a graduation ceremony. People on the scene reportedly saw the woman sit down and cover herself with her graduation gown before the gunshot was heard.

It added though that according to campus security director Colin Fouche, the shooting appeared to be accidental.

A spokesperson for Tuks, Sanku Tsunke, also said it seemed to have been an accident, adding that it had happened near the student centre.

Tsunke said the gun, which was in the woman's possession, accidentally discharged, wounding her in the stomach.

"It was accidental, it was not the result of crime-related activity."

The matter was being investigated by Brooklyn police.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said the woman, in her mid 20s, was seriously injured.

She was stabilised at the scene and taken to a nearby hospital.

Pretoria - The student who shot herself in the stomach on graduation day at the University of Pretoria on Wednesday was apparently trying to commit suicide.

Eyewitness News reported that Chantelle Stockel , 24, tried to kill herself because she had failed her studies and had not obtained her degree.

Stockel was admitted to hospital with a gunshot wound to her stomach.

She apparently shot herself hours after her former classmates graduated.

A hospital spokesperson said she had undergone surgery but was conscious and stable.

It was revealed that she had failed her law degree in 2011 but had not told her parents.

She then stole her father’s pistol and planned to kill herself.

Police were investigating.

Faaark! Would have made international headlines if she was successful... with the suicide that is. Sad.

What I don't get is if these people really wanted to commit suicide - surely shooting yourself in the stomach is a really bad way of doing it. I mean really how dumb can you be to not go for the head or the heart.

And how selfish can you be to do it in the middle of some ceremony for other people. Do it in your bedroom away from where other people have to witness your crap.

This makes me angry.

I doubt she was that stupid. I think she did it to survive. Attention/cry for help etc. I highly doubt they'll be angry at her now for failing.
