Just back from the Turkey trip. Was not particularly blown away. Apologies if I sound jaded, but I have traveled a lot in my lifetime and this was nothing special. I understand that a lot of folks will differ from me!
The upside was that it was reasonably affordable. 1 Turkish Lira = 1 ZAR, so if you leave the touristy areas, the food is cheap.
It just did not blow my mind ... with one exception, that being hot air ballooning in Cappadocia. It was an awesome experience.

Where did you go to?
I think Turkey is mainly a sea and sun place with some nice resorts.
I know you said previously that you don't travel that way.
But tastes differ, I liked Barcelona, my wife did not like it at all.

I found Istanbul "nothing new" if that makes sense .... almost like a mix of Marrakech, Cairo, Dubai and the likes - all of which are places I have visited before.
I think I e.g. expected the Blue Mosque to be more amazing .... it was under maintenance and nothing special.
LOVED Cappadocia, stayed in a cave and took my little one for a balloon ride.
Antalya .... nothing special. Lovely restaurants on the various beachfront, but not worth flying there just for that?
As I said, I understand people have different opinions.

I believe its one of the great cities of the world.
Happy you also experienced Cappadocia, its most definitely a magical experience and no other city that offers that experience.
I enjoyed the beach vibe and parties in Antalya and yes its nothing special and don't think ill return again but glad i got to experience it.
The blue mosque has been under maintenance since 2014 already so i also know what you mean.
Turkey definitely gave me all the feels and satisfied all my senses and that is exactly what makes a country or city stand out to me.
Looking quite forward to what @Snyper564 has got to say when he returns from Serbia.
Yeah loads more detail to follow on my thread in the next few days. Wrapping up this side and will be out Saturday evening back to SA. Did some beautiful wine tasting in a little village on our way to Novi Sad this afternoon. Also have a hike planned in their national park then making the most of our last days.

Yep, we also stayed close to Istiklal Street. There was a bomb explosion a week before we arrived there, but back then the attacks were against the police and government, not civilians. We were in Istiklal street quite often on our trip as there are lots of shops and restaurants there. It's very busy till very late.
Hello all, piggybacking on this thread. Thinking of doing a trip to the Turkey. Question on flights, anyone booked with Turkish Airlines directly. Quote is in USD, so unsure of any additional charges. Also, is travelstart worth it ? (Given all the bad reviews regarding them). Thanks a mil
Dont touch travel start wanted to use them last year and I made 4 calls to ask questions. Each said waiting time of an hour didn't bother waiting. Imagine it's an emergency. Left them and booked via flights by investec.
Look at flight scanner kayak etc for flights too

I went in October, booked with Pentravel. We flew with Qatar paid about R14k for two return flights.
I would avoid Travelstart. When I was shopping around for flights they were around R2k less than Pentravel, so I paid a bit more for the peace of mind.
I booked directly with Turkish Airlines about 3 or 4 years ago. Yes it was all quoted in USD and I recall wondering how it would translate into Rand, but tbh I don't recall anything untoward about the Rand amount taken from my FNB account. If they'd ripped me off I'm sure I'd have remembered.
When we booked with Turkish Airlines (5 years back) it was maybe like R500 more than I expected after all was said and done, which in the grand scheme of things was fine for me.
Can't comment on Travel Start, never used them.

Same, did a round trip in October. Went off without a hiccup. U also can claim the miles via Qatar.
That said they offer very little flexibility..

Hi there, quick question regarding the FNB global card. I will be traveling to Paris next week and I have the FNB Euro Global card. Did you have any issues with swiping at shops? My wife had some issues last year in Paris at tillpoints so just wanted to check with you.
