Turning broadband upside down

One loses count of how many times South Africa’s government has made pronouncements about broadband. It has been moved left, then right and now it appears to have been turned upside down.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has recently made very strong statements about spectrum, and said that spectrum would be released to industry soon.

More spectrum does not equal cheaper data. Stop spreading that false narrative.

A lesson with LTE shows that giving more bandwith do not work.

Ramaphosa pays his election debth selling bandwith for free. We need to solve couple of outstanding issues like not complying with data rollover, etc. A list is long.

I want my data bundle to not expire, so I can manage it wisely, not waste a bit.

Bunch of useless lazy a**hats doing nothing because that's what they paid to do. Sit around and talk but do nothing and they so good at it.

I've just done a really thorough study on 5G, which also needed a lot of 4G input.

I'm not sure if giving out spectrum would reduce the price, but it would definitely improve the available throughput and move us well on the road to 5G. Other countries are running LTE with over 1gbps (nominal) speeds and we no-where near that. Many other countries are well into their 5G spectrum auctions and we are still sitting in pre-2010 discussions.

You have that now... They don't expire after a month anymore... What do you want next then?

Let them come to the party and reduce prices first. After allocation I can guarantee nothing will happen as spectrum from the start hasn't been the issue and they'll just come with other excuses. As it is they don't actually need any more spectrum.

For data not to expire, like it should have always been. It's a ridiculous notion that something you pay for just disappears.

True, but owing spectrum is a good investment, it is why they always lobby for it.

It was my point in other 5G thread.

From Zoltan's recent presentation at MyBB : South Africa is behind every other country where MTN work except for Afghanisatn, South Sudan and Yemen in assigning spectrum.

As Zoltan pointed out, operators would most likely NOT reduce pricing, but would rather try to offer larger bundles at better pricing.

My view is that it is the poorest who are the most ripped-off, so the operators do need to create a more affordable entry package

The ANC will not do anything until they find a way to enrich themselves. Just another prime example of CR's empty promises and ANC's incompetence.

And your graph show that the most corrupt countries gave away most of spectrum for free.

I'm not sure if you meant that as a flippant statement or a serious view. I cannot see correlation on that chart between level of corruption and amount of spectrum assigned.
