Hi all,

I want to buy a new TV (flatscreen), but am not interested in DSTV.
The one I want is a 32" HD ready TV, and I am not at all sure what this means in terms of how I get it to function.
I would like to use it for watching the occasional programmes on the normal TV channels, and for watching DVD movies and series.
Would it be possible to connect an existing DVD player, (an old type) to this TV, and if not, what are suggestions?

Yes, you probably can connect a DVD player to it but I would recommend that you get at least a Full HD tv.
What is your budget?

Oh and welcome to the forum.

Hi Charni, welcome.

I know nothing at all about TVs and these are the things I've learned:

HDMI and USB connectors are essential. I have to use the "optical out" connection for some devices but there's another option on some TVs.

Firstly dont waste your time with a curved screen. from experience its only to show off. Try to get a smart TV. They have dropped prices recently. i agree with the post above. HDMI and USB are a must.

OVHD decoder will be good also. no monthly fees but clarity for the flat screen.

The reason that I picked this particular one is the size, 32". Anything else will be way too big for my room. Even 32" is pushing it a bit.
My budget? As little as possible, as I really watch very little TV.

Thanks for all responses, I will take under advisement the HDMI and USB connectors, but what would I need the USB connector for, and does it connect into the TV?

My advice, go for the HD ready tv. You will not need a FHD TV if you only plan to watch DVD's and free-to-air channels. And yes, you will be able to connect your DVD player via normal RCA cables (red, yellow and white), possibly even HDMI if your dvd player has the output. Most DVD players nowadays play all formats via USB as well.

As you said, you dont watch a lot of TV, so why spend a fortune on something that will be under-utlilized.

@Charni: Most of the latest TVs have a USB port where you can plug in a USB flash drive with the media that you want to watch.

Esquire currently have a 32" Hisense TV on special for R2099.

Here are some other TV specials from Guzzle.

The cheap Blaupunkt range from Pick n Pay might also be worth considering if they go on special in the next few weeks.

Well, here's the thing - I bought the TV, used it for about a year, got rid of it.
I wish I'd known what I know now about streaming - I watch everything I want to watch on my laptop.
I'm single, and old, so not really that invested in keeping up with the latest tech, just want to access entertainment.
Some games, some series, the odd movie and reality show.................but thanks, all of you. (very delayed)
