TV Licences should be scrapped altogether

Indeed. Get a fixed budget from the fiscus and make the rest work from other revenue sources, like advertising. If the SABC does not perform, fire the board.
I am willing to bet money that the current licence system costs more than it collects.
 
I think Aguna has unintentionally opened a can of worms here by raising the topic at a time when the public is very anti-SABC. Hopefully he's raised a topic which will end up (correctly) with the total scrapping of this useless relic. Key viewers - older people and rural people without broadband - are the one's who watch SABC and can least afford it.
 
Aguma said the Act requires people to pay a TV Licence for a device which can receive a TV signal, but argued that more people are watching TV on devices such as computers, tablets, and cellphones.

Explain again how computers, tablets, and cellphones can receive a TV signal without a receiver?

The best suggestion yet is to scrap the SABC and save taxpayers money.

Unlike other news broadcasters the SABC does not even have an app in the Apple store that one can download to just see the local news.

While other broadcasters try to enlarge their footprint, the SABC is fighting against technological advances. Shame.

Quite right! he introduced a very sensitive topic at the completely wrong time and in the wrong manner. But then that is what you get when persons with no knowledge and experience in the industry are put in charge ....

At least the Minister seems to know what the real issues are ......

Not everything in this world revolves around smart devices and apps! The SABC is Public Broadcaster broadcasting content to citizens over the air, many of which do not have access to smart devices and lack the coverage. So why spend resources on developing something for persons who in any case do not want to make use of their services?

If they are planning on trying to "tax" smart devices then they need to be in that space as well.... they need to show SOME value in the space, even if it is negligible value.

I agree, that would be a good idea. But then that would show that proper planning was done and the announcement of the change to the legislation proposed would be in line with a proper implementation plan. ... Not something you do when all you are trying to do is salvage an existing situation that has gone terribly wrong.

So Aguma does not know how much damage his ill conceived statement has done.
