TV License worth applying?

Huge difference between paying for something YOU WATCH and something you don't. Your TV licence goes to the SABC. If you watch SABC sure pay, if you don't you are not a hypocrite if you don't pay.
 
I used to pay for it .... even though i never used to watch it .. but once Hlaudi the ****bag started all the crap i stopped.

I bought a TV this weekend.

you do need a TV licence, AND an ID of the licence holder.

what I did is we walked in with my father in law. he has a valid licence.
his ID/licence was used, I paid.
everyone left happy.

my first TV, I used my best friend's TV licence.
my second TV I made the mistake of buying online though takealot, and now I have a TV licence that I owe them a lot of money for. and I will not pay it ever.

I do not listen to radio.
I do not watch SABC or even DSTV.
I refuse to pay for the praise singers of Hlaudi (literally your licence fee goes towards paying for a choir to sing Hlaudi's praises)

So because you don't use public hospitals, you can work out how much of your tax is going towards hospitals and then instruct your employer to not pay over that portion of tax to SARS?

The whole problem here is exactly like the e-Toll saga: give people the sense that they have a choice in paying something, and they'll do whatever they can to not pay it.

Who cares about civic duty these days?

Common attitude: I don't watch SABC, I don't care about the millions of South Africans for whom SABC is their only broadcaster or recognise that it is my duty as a semi-privileged person to pay a fee that enables that for my countrymen. (Just like public hospitals, see)

The law is not that you have to pay your TV licence if you watch SABC and rate all the programmes 8 out of 10 stars on IMDB. It is about ownership of a television. If you own one, you must pay. Because law.

Hey Foxhound, no I get it :) Nothing personal.

But I can assure you, if I could I would not pay tax towards social schemes like public hospitals and the like. Unfortunately I don't have that choice, on those I have a choice, I exercise my right to choose :p
 
FWIW, the TV license is also for the SABC radio stations. So you would need to not watch TV, and not listen to an SABC radio station in order to not get any benefit.

In case anyone missed it, the SABC is trying to make it applicable to online sources of entertainment too.
 
Just remember, it is a bit like Hotel California, you can (try to ) check out any time you like, but you can never leave. After a year of fighting with SABC, during which in had to resubmit my evidence that I and our TV had left the country about 10 times, I finally got a letter stating I am free, FREE at last.

After leaving mom and dad's house, I bought a bunch of items for my new place. I found a big screen TV on sale at HiFi Corp, and decided to buy it. Also filled in a form listing my personal details, and showed them my ID - for the new TV license. Those 10 minutes meant I am on their system and will probably pay till I die. My advice is to not get a TV license. Ask a friend, family member or colleague to use theirs. Offer them R100 if you must. Still cheaper than renewing every year!

The shop assistants and cashiers don't give a damn whose license is used to purchase a TV. So long as it's valid and the owner is there in the store when you pay for it.

Best advice which I figured out too late.

Now I've been receiving an SMS every day for the past two weeks to pay R503.

And so it begins. My late father still received his renewal notice years after passing away. At least we threw away his SIM after informing all about his death.

I think you should pay. Much less money, time and effort to do that.
