Moving into new place. Looking to buy TV and do not have a TV license - would I need to present a valid TV license to be able to purchase a TV?

Would like to get some opinions...

At R265 pa it's not too expensive, but is this not another E-Tolls scenario?

Who pays and who does not and why?

FARK NO!

Get someone that has a valid one and use that one to buy a TV. Once you on their system you are NEVER getting off!

You can get around it by using a certain online retailers' App which upon checkout will ask you for your license number. Just close the app and reopen it and go to the checkout and pay

*Disclaimer - I don't advocate doing the right thing to do*

I got a license in 2012 when I bought a new TV. I gave it to a family member when I bought a projector in 2015, but I am still getting threatening SMS's and emails from them to pay the license for a TV I no longer have.

Just so you know, last time I bought a TV I had to present my ID.
They typed that ID number into their computer and brought up details of my tv license...
Dunno if retailers would allow you to buy using someone else's ID?

They normally don't care. If they do, get other person to purchase it for you. Given you are in the same city I guess :p

I've bought tvs with emailed copies of other people id's before. At the end of the day I would do whatever you can to avoid buying a tv license.

You don't need one if you buy from takealot.

Only issue with someone else buying on their name for you is that they will never be able to get off the system. If they no longer have a TV and want to get off then they have to show proof that they no longer own any TV and this will be difficult to do. So only use someone else's ID if they are ok with paying license fees forever.

SABC does however accept an affidavit as proof if the TV was stolen. This is how I got off the system back in 2010.

Makes no sense. I can buy a TV tomorrow and Monday say I took and back and don't want a license no more. All said and done, getting yourself off that system is near impossible. So even if they wanted to get off they couldn't. My dad still pays his loyally every year. I will farking NEVER!

Don't apply. There are places that don't ask for the licence. Avoid it as far as possible

I pay for my TV license.

I don't like being a hypocrite complaining about crime in South Africa while simultaneously deciding which laws I will break as it suits my self-interest, like so many on here.
