The best TV size for your wallet

MyBroadband analysed the prices of several mainstream 4K TVs in the most commonly available sizes in South Africa and found that smaller TVs generally provide better value for money.

Most major TV makers — including Hisense, LG, and Samsung — have migrated their primary models with size options beyond 40-inches to 4K resolution.

I have always wondered why the measure is not area rather than the diagonal measure used. If you do the comparison based on area, it makes much more sense.

But be that as it may, the choice of TV should be based on not only size but the correct size for the room in which it will be installed.

Another point is how many of the TVs reviewed had DVB-T2 tuners in them?

I have seen some fancy TVs in my time.

They don't interest me.

Surely the price comparison should be done on the viewing area (width times height), and not on the diagonal?
Using the diagonal for comparison biases against larger TVs

I used the TCL P615 for the comparison, as it is also a 4K range that spans all sizes TCL does. I left out 75" as TCL doesn't have a 75" in any of their ranges. I copied the MyBB styling as closely as I could in two minutes so you feel right at home :p

I find it interesting how LG prices have dropped while Samsung have climbed. It used to be that LG was quite expensive (although not as much as Sony), while Samsungs were pretty cheap.

Here we go:

I used the ratios [diagonal * 0.872] for width and [diagonal * 0.49] for height as seen here, multiplied them together and rounded to the nearest square inch. Price/square inch given with cents included as several differences would blur away altogether without the granularity of cents.

55-inch is the overall sweet spot for price/square inch, with the TCL 55P615 being the overall winner. 43" prives the worst overall value, with the LG 43" being the ultimate loser in price/square inch.
