DJ Black Coffee has faced a backlash after performing in Israel, despite calls for a cultural boycott.

JOHANNESBURG – Social media users have slammed DJ and record producer Nkosinathi Maphumulo, better known as DJ Black Coffee, for performing in Israel.

People said he had indeed sold out by defying calls for a boycott of Israel because of its treatment of Palestineans and "occupation" of land.

I found this interesting, given the situation in Israel - also heard perspectives from both sides. Some people are defending him, saying that he is just getting paid - why should the political situation concern him. Others took him to task though because he once declined a gig in Swaziland, saying that he will not perform there while Swazis are suffering.

He should have just kept his mouth shut and got a PR company to draw up an apology but nope he had to be an idiot. That is what made things worse for him imo. He went from, "I didn't know" to "whatever, you don't pay my bills" when he was proven to be a liar (he was called out for playing in Israel in 2014 as well so clearly he was aware of it already).

Fscking idiotic twitterati....

That is all that needs to be said.

Black Coffee should have started his twitter response at a very simple "GFY"....

They have their right to their opinion and he has his right to choose where he wants to perform. Nothing to see here

This was pretty much the sentiment on social media.

Who cares what Twitter thinks?
Same people as the loudmouth leftists in Kalifornia and the vapid celebs in NY.
Wouldn't expect any less from slacktivists who think their opinion matters.

True. But he was also inconsistent in his selection in that he refused to play in Swaziland because of a political situation but he chose to play in Israel irrespective of their political situation, which I'm sure he was aware of. My opinion, he shouldn't have been political in the first place - the Swaziland situation and the fact that he had been called out previously about playing in Israel, came to bite him in the ass.

@VernD but i swear I did see him play at Simunye Club Fair once but this is going back some years!

DJ Black Tea has some decent tracks. Pity he didn't issue an apology thought especially since it's hypocritical of him to rerfuse Swazi but agree to Israel.

Probably before he got internationally famous. Was hoping to see him at Bushfire some time but it doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon.

@VernD Thats true about the famous part but i do remember him playing there! Anyways I used to live in Siteki until i moved back to SA

Has he played in any other Middle East countries with their lamentable human rights records and was there any outcry?

I actually drove through Siteki for the first time this past weekend - went to Mozambique for the weekend. The furthest that I had gone to up to that point, was Hlane and the King Mswati III International airport - staying in Mbabane but working mostly in Ezulwini.

Maybe Swazi is personal and Israel he does not care about?
Though I don't understand the hate for Israel in any case.

It's fashionable to hate on the jews.

Islam and it's followers are a pox on society, the arab nations use to excel at science until about 1000 CE.

But yeah blame the jews.

Hates on the Muslims and bitches about Jews being hated.

If you can understand and even promote hatred towards Muslims then surely you can understand why Israel has a massive PR problem.

Who dat

How is it possible for logic thinking people to come to a conclusion that Israel are the bad guys and Palestine to good guys?!

There are MUCH more freedoms enjoyed by people living in Israel than they would EVER EVER EVER get to experience in Palestine?!

I understand why he didn't go to Swaziland. Swaziland is too "deep in the bottom" #biggets****whole

It makes me like Black Coffee even more than he went to Israel!!!

no, because twitter and the western media is biased and will jump onto anything just to get views/clicks.
so even if he did play in iran or north korea, they would still be people who will complain bitterly about somebody.

honestly don't understand some people and why they behave a certain way, and throw a hissy fit over nothing really.
